As the Wimbledon Championships returns for a 132nd year, millions of people will be tuning in to watch their favourite tennis aces go head-to-head on the grass courts. While tennis stands out among other sports for the arguably comparable fanfare that both its male and female professional players receive throughout the year, the sport remains inherently sexist on many accounts. For starters, the fact that the women taking part in Grand Slam tournaments only play best of three sets in their matches while the men play best of five says a great deal about the way in which the physicality of both sexes is regarded. Where has the assumption come from that female tennis players, unquestionably some of the fittest people in the entire world, would be unable to handle playing two more sets in a match just like their male counterparts? After all, everyone who runs a marathon must complete the full 26.2 miles, regardless of their sex. With that in mind, why should Grand Slam tennis be any … [Read more...] about Both men and women are disadvantaged by sexism at Wimbledon
Charles Moore 1 July 2018 10:00 AM 1 July 2018 10:00 AM Share Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Email Whatsapp We went to the perfect midsummer wedding of my wife’s god-daughter in Norfolk this weekend. The service was pure Book of Common Prayer, omitting only some of the longer prayers and the woman saying ‘obey’ and (I think) ‘serve’. The service states the theological nature of marriage (‘signifying unto us the mystical union that is betwixt Christ and His Church’), and then its purposes. These are 1) children, ‘to be brought up in the fear and nurture of the Lord’. 2) as ‘a remedy against sin, and to avoid fornication’. 3) for ‘the mutual society, help and comfort, that the one ought to have of the other, both in prosperity and in adversity’. I found myself checking off how many of these concepts would win the assent of most people in modern Britain. None of the religious … [Read more...] about Are wedding vows unfair against men?
Danielle Rowley, Scottish Labour MP for Midlothian, apologised for being late to a House of Commons debate this week, telling the speaker: "I'm on my period." Here, Ms Rowley explains why women need to talk more openly about the issue.A year ago next week I made my maiden speech in the House of Commons as Labour's youngest MP, but on Thursday it seems that I did something even more momentous.I became the first member to tell the chamber that I was on my period. It's good that this has had so much coverage, but the fact a woman has said she's on her period - something that happens to half the population every month - has made such big news just shows how far we need to go to break the taboo.I talk to my friends and colleagues about my period, just as I would if I had a bad cold. If any other issue caused so much pain, surely we would talk freely about it.So yes, I did it to break a taboo. But I also did it to highlight just how much periods cost the average woman - if she is lucky … [Read more...] about Why as an MP I told the Commons I was on my period
A TEEN sugar baby has lifted the lid on the household item that could be a HUGE giveaway that your partner is having an affair. The 19-year-old woman, who goes by the name of Gracelyn White, revealed she gets paid to date older rich men and is often gifted designer shoes, lavish holidays or large sums of cash. London-based Gracelyn revealed to the Mirror that a simple bar of soap could be an indication that your partner is cheating. The sugar baby said: “One man told me that he's always careful not to use the soap in a hotel when he showers after having sex with someone other than his wife so that she cannot smell a foreign scent when he gets home. "I'm not sure if he brings his own soap or if he just uses water but carrying soap could indicate that your husband is sleeping with other people.” Gracelyn admitted that while some of her “partners” are wealthy CEOs in their 30s, there have been “old, fat and disgusting” men who have pushed her for sex or … [Read more...] about Teen sugar baby reveals the common household item that could be a BIG giveaway your partner is cheating
