Charles Darwin: ‘Treasured’ keepsake box owned by naturalist’s daughters to go on display

· February 24, 2021 ·

A "treasured" keepsake box that once belonged to Charles Darwin's daughters has been donated to English Heritage and will go on show later this year. The Victorian red leather box contains shells gathered by Darwin on his famous Beagle voyage, where his observations fostered the ideas that led him to develop his theory of evolution. Darwin's descendants have donated the red leather box and its "treasures" to English Heritage, which will display the object at what was Darwin's home - Down House, in Kent. The naturalist and his wife Emma gave the box to their daughters, who, starting with the eldest, Annie, filled it with family mementos. When Annie died, aged 10 in 1851, the box passed to her sister Henrietta, otherwise known as Etty. Advertisement She continued to fill it with souvenirs, including locks of hair belonging to members of the Darwin family, Darwin's silk handkerchief and the shells. More from Kent Napier Barracks: Asylum … [Read more...] about Charles Darwin: ‘Treasured’ keepsake box owned by naturalist’s daughters to go on display

COVID-19: Dettol-maker cleans up as pandemic demand drives record sales

· February 24, 2021 ·

Reckitt Benckiser has reported record annual sales following high demand for its cleaning products and disinfectants during the coronavirus pandemic. Reckitt Benckiser (RB), which includes the Dettol and Cillit Bang brands in its stable, said group like-for-like sales rose by almost 12% to £14bn during 2020 as consumers sought means to protect themselves from COVID-19 . Its hygiene division saw comparable revenues rise by almost 20% while it also expanded into 40 new markets as production of disinfectant sprays and wipes was ramped up. RB pointed to market share gains for many of its brands, including Durex , and reported that 80% of consumers planned to maintain their purchases of germ protection and disinfection brands. But it predicted group revenues would be flat to slightly higher in the current year as peak demand had been reached - a factor reflected in the share price reaction from investors as the stock was only fractionally up on the day in early … [Read more...] about COVID-19: Dettol-maker cleans up as pandemic demand drives record sales

Covid vaccines available in GP surgeries TODAY – all you need to know about getting yours

· January 7, 2021 ·

COVID vaccines will be available from GP surgeries from today - as the race to protect Brits from the virus is ramped up. The Oxford/AstraZeneca jab can be stored at fridge temperatures making it easier to administer, unlike the Pfizer jab which requires storage at -70C. It's hoped more than 700 GP surgeries will be delivering vaccines by the end of the week - after the UK recorded the highest daily death toll since April. The UK reported a further 1,041 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Wednesday. Record numbers are also currently in hospital with coronavirus, with a further 3,500 admitted in England on Monday. Some 1.3 million people have already received either the Pfizer/BioNTech or Oxford/AstraZeneca jab. And millions of extra Covid vaccines could be ready within weeks as approval times for fresh batches are slashed to just five days. The jabs will be given to those deemed most vulnerable to the virus first - and are … [Read more...] about Covid vaccines available in GP surgeries TODAY – all you need to know about getting yours
