A WOMAN has been eaten alive by a black bear after taking her two dogs for a walk in woodland in Colorado. Partially eaten remains of the unidentified 39-year-old were found by her boyfriend in a well-known footpath in Durango, La Plata County. The man, who returned home from work on Friday evening found the dogs outside the pair's home but not his girlfriend. After alerting the authorities, he went out to search for her and later discovered her remains on a footpath. According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), the woman's death is believed to have been caused by a bear attack after she took her two dogs on a walk on Friday afternoon. Upon arriving on scene, officers "observed signs of consumption on the body and an abundance of bear scat and hair", CPW said. Two weeks ago, Darmstadt and Iceland midfielder Victor Palsson gave an emotional interview. The 29-year-old talked about grief after the death of his mother, including crying in front of his 3-year-old son and losing 8 kilos (17.6 pounds) during what he described as a dark time. Palsson's readiness to talk openly about topics that are rarely public knowledge in football speaks to the tools he has developed and how much more open the world is becoming about mental health . The question is: has professional football done just as much development as he has? "In professional sport, it is often stated that it's important to always be strong and keep going… It has to be okay and accepted to have mental struggles and to ask for help," Palsson said in his interview on Darmstadt's website. During the pandemic, mental health has become a more prominent topic for many areas of society. "With such topics, we are all the same," sports psychologist Dr. Thorsten Leber told DW. … [Read more...] about Does football care about mental health?
India's coronavirus crisis is spreading outside major cities, with rural districts in at least 10 states recording a surge of cases and deaths in April. Rural districts recorded more COVID-related deaths than urban districts for the first time last month, despite urban areas having higher overall cases, according to the How India Lives" data repository. In 2020, the first wave of the pandemic in India was initially limited to densely populated cities. The ongoing second wave in 2021 is ravaging wide swathes of rural India, which is starved of public health resources. Shortages of available emergency services have also prompted some villagers to travel to cities, sometimes to other states, in a desperate attempt to find care. Bharti Sharma, a public health consultant, told DW that reports from the ground show a huge swath of the rural population will be at risk if health care deficits are not addressed "immediately." Which rural areas are suffering? India's federal … [Read more...] about COVID in rural India poses parallel health care crisis
Human remains have been found in two of the three bears euthanised after they were suspected of attacking and killing a woman, according to wildlife officials. The 39-year-old woman's body was found north of Durango in southwestern Colorado on Friday. Authorities suspected she had been the victim of a rare bear attack due to the bear scat and hair found at the scene. A dog team found a 10-year-old female black bear and two yearling cubs nearby. They were killed after it was suspected they attacked the woman and could attack someone else. The human remains were found inside the stomachs of the sow and one of the cubs during a necropsy on Saturday, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) said. Advertisement An initial examination by a pathologist showed the bears all appeared to be in good health with no sign of disease and adequate fat stores following the winter hibernation season, according to the agency. It added that a microscopic examination of … [Read more...] about Human remains found in two bears following fatal attack on woman in Colorado
The video, filmed this week in an emergency waiting room in a Tunisian hospital, is only 12 seconds long. But it shows just how much strain the Tunisian health care system is currently under, as the country is battered by a third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. The video, which cannot be shown for reasons of patient privacy, was sent to DW by a concerned Tunisian doctor. Every surface in the waiting room is covered. Three Tunisians sit upright on a concrete bench, a fourth is curled up at its edge. Directly opposite, less than a meter away, three other people lie on the tiled floor. Another patient lies on top of a cupboard and two more locals lie on stretchers in the far corner. All of the people visible in the video have oxygen masks strapped to their faces. All of them have COVID-19. Tunisia once had some of the lowest rates of infection in the world, but has more recently seen a major upsurge in COVID-19 cases . During February and March the country was seeing around 500 new … [Read more...] about Tunisia’s third COVID-19 wave: Doctors warn of health system collapse
