A "treasured" keepsake box that once belonged to Charles Darwin's daughters has been donated to English Heritage and will go on show later this year. The Victorian red leather box contains shells gathered by Darwin on his famous Beagle voyage, where his observations fostered the ideas that led him to develop his theory of evolution. Darwin's descendants have donated the red leather box and its "treasures" to English Heritage, which will display the object at what was Darwin's home - Down House, in Kent. The naturalist and his wife Emma gave the box to their daughters, who, starting with the eldest, Annie, filled it with family mementos. When Annie died, aged 10 in 1851, the box passed to her sister Henrietta, otherwise known as Etty. Advertisement She continued to fill it with souvenirs, including locks of hair belonging to members of the Darwin family, Darwin's silk handkerchief and the shells. As of Tuesday, the German capital is one year into its five-year "rent freeze," and the data collected so far has given both opponents and supporters fuel for their arguments. A survey published last week by property ad portal ImmoScout24 found that while Berlin's average rent has indeed dropped in the past year, by 7.8%, the number of new flats on the market eligible for a rent reduction had dropped too — by some 30%. That has had a major effect on the competition for new apartments, ImmoScout24 said, with an average of 214 people answering each rental advert in January 2021, compared to 128 in the same month last year. Many cities around the world have some kind of rent control measures in place, but Berlin's rent cap law, in effect since February 2020, is unique. It meant that rents for 90% of Berlin's apartments were frozen for five years at the level they were at in June 2019. New rental contracts could not be above that level, and as of November 2020, any existing rents … [Read more...] about Berlin’s revolutionary rent cap — success or flop?
A couple has doubled the value of their £1million country home by embarking on an extensive home makeover without blowing money as they find bargains on ebay and auction sites. Tracey Gill and her husband spent £360,000 on stunning renovations that have transformed their East Sussex village house from a nondescript property to one that is beautiful, lighter and brighter. The house, which was bought for £1.025million in 2016, has now been revalued at between £1.8million and £2million. The couple spent 18 months transforming the rural property into a dream home with beautiful design and decor. Tracy said: “My husband gave me the brief when house hunting to find a house ripe for transformation in the prettiest location. “I knew I could change any house we bought so the important factor was the land and location.” She said the house they bought was “covered in cream pebble dash with concrete roof tiles, dark rooms, artexed walls and low ceilings” which was an issue for her … [Read more...] about Couple double value of their home with stunning £360k makeover – and now it’s worth £2m
THOUSANDS of pubs, restaurants, hairdressers and bingo halls across England are now open as lockdown measures are eased. July 4 marked the start of the phase three of Boris Johnson's plan to get the country back to some normality while also trying to limit the spread of the coronavirus. Brits can get haircut, watch a blockbuster film and go to church from this weekend as long as the businesses are Covid-19 secure. It means pubs and restaurants will be limited to table service , while hairdressers will have to wear visors as they work . Firms will also have to collect contact details from customers to help NHS Track and Trace to control the spread of the virus. But Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned that unlocking the nation relies a lot on the "British public to use their common sense". And if the number of positive coronavirus cases look like they could be getting out of control, local lockdowns will be put in place, like in Leicester . But it won't … [Read more...] about Full list of businesses now open including pubs, hairdressers and cinemas
