They were sobbing silently, waiting for their turn at the end of a dark corridor — a dozen petrified women, seeking medical check-ups in Adigrat's hospital after having been raped. None of them was willing to utter more than a few words. Every day, Eritrean soldiers come to take medical equipment. Patients and doctors are terrified. "They come here every day, even two times per day," explained a general practitioner, who wished to remain anonymous. "Yesterday, they stole a stretcher. When they come, not only the patients, but also the staff run away. The treatments get interrupted." Civilians raped and injured Since fighting erupted in the Tigray region in early November, the public hospital in Adrigrat has received over 174 rape survivors. But there are fears many more could be trapped in villages. "These [cases] are only those who have access to this hospital, but we don't know what happens in the 18 districts in the Eastern [Tigray] zone - what happens to the mothers, what … [Read more...] about Anger and collective trauma scar Ethiopia’s Tigray region
A van driver has been found guilty of murdering 10 people and attempting to kill another 16. Alek Minassian, 28, told police he was motivated by a desire to punish society for his perceived status as an "incel" (involuntary celibate). In 2018 the twisted murderer crashed a rental van into dozens of people in Toronto, Canada, because he believed women would not have sex with him. It was the worst mass killing Canada had experienced for decades. Minassian's former classmates from school said he was a troubled pupil who would lick his hands and meow like a cat. Reza Fakhteh, who attended secondary school with Minassian, said: "I think it was his way of coping. "I would assume it's his idea of trying to cope with not knowing how to interact with people." Another said: "He always had a helper. He was always on the computer or you’d see him in the hallway making certain noises, like meowing and hugging himself." Minassian was today found guilty of murder and attempted murder, … [Read more...] about Toronto van attacker guilty of 10 murders and 16 attempted murders after hitting crowd
Carrie Symonds 's Lulu Lytle-inspired makeover has caused uproar, but the 32-year-old apparently saw the lavish Downing Street overhaul as necessary to rid the Prime Minister's residence of the 'John Lewis nightmare' left behind by former occupant Theresa May , according to Tatler. It came as a painful blow to fans of Britain's favourite department store — and an unfounded one. For while the 157-year-old company may have a reputation for being safe and suburban, look closer and it offers plenty of chic, timeless pieces. Boris Johnson's girlfriend Carrie Symonds's Lulu Lytle-inspired makeover of Downing Street has caused uproar There are £2,000 sofas (a snip compared with the £20,000 three-seaters from Lytle's company Soane Britain), lamps for under £20 (not £12,000) and wallpaper for £9 a roll (not £500). The young black poet made internationally famous by her recital during the inauguration of Joe Biden says she was followed home by a security guard because she looked "suspicious". Amanda Gorman , who was the US's first National Youth Poet Laureate and was widely praised for her performance in January, says she was regarded as a "threat" because she is black. She told her 1.5 million Twitter followers: "A security guard tailed me on my walk home tonight. He demanded if I lived there because 'you look suspicious.' A security guard tailed me on my walk home tonight. He demanded if I lived there because “you look suspicious.” I showed my keys & buzzed myself into my building. He left, no apology. KILLER CLOWN is no laughing matter for the bookies in the BetVictor Greatwood Gold Cup (1.50) at Newbury this afternoon. Emma Lavelle’s seven-year-old son of Getaway is learning on the job over fences. Having drawn a blank on his first three attempts in the discipline - at Uttoxeter, Exeter and Sandown Park - Adam Wedge’s mount came good at Kempton Park on Boxing Day. Sent off at 9-2 for a 10-runner event over today’s two-and-a-half-mile distance, Killer Clown jumped with polish before galloping clear to beat Falco Blitz by seven and a half lengths. The British Horseracing Authority handicapper hasn’t taken that performance lying down, raising my selection a whopping 15lb to a new rating of 138. But there’s little doubt that Killer Clown is on the up and, with more to come on the fifth start of his career over fences, he gets the vote to take the £22,780 first prize back to Lavelle’s Wilitshire base.
