Tiger Woods was unaware of how ‘gravely’ he was injured after car crash, says first officer on scene

· February 24, 2021 ·

Tiger Woods did not appear to be "aware of how gravely he was injured" after his car crash in California, the first officer on the scene has said. The 45-year-old golf star suffered serious leg injuries when his car hit a kerb and then a tree before rolling several times on the border of Rolling Hills Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes in Los Angeles on Tuesday morning. No other cars were involved. Carlos Gonzalez, a deputy from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, told NBC News he arrived within minutes of a 911 call from a member of the public. Asked if Woods was aware of his injuries, the officer said: "He didn't mention anything. I don't think he was aware of how gravely he was injured at the time. Advertisement "It could be a mixture of adrenaline. It could have been shock. "Again, it was very quick - the moment I arrived from the moment he rolled over - so I don't know if he had time to fully assess his injuries." Bach scores owned by Gustav Mahler to be made available to researchers

· January 24, 2021 ·

The Bach Archive in Leipzig has often been in the media spotlight following new acquisitions or endowments related to the 18th-century composer Johann Sebastian Bach . For instance, in 2015, the institution inherited a valuable portrait of the composer by artist Elias Gottlob Haussmann. The painting was brought to Germany from the US. In 2017, the archive received a handwritten copy of Bach's famous cantata, "Oh Ewigkeit, du Donnerwort," which changed hands for nearly €2 million ($2.5 million). Surprisingly, the archive was able to get a copy of the first edition of Bach's collected works only now. They originally belonged to composer Gustav Mahler , who left handwritten notes in the documents. These annotations could provide valuable insights to Bach and Mahler experts. Since 2015, the Leipzig archive's collection includes this famous Bach portrait by Elias Gottlob Haussmann A gem for the Bach Archive The Bach Archive researches the life and works of Johann … [Read more...] about Bach scores owned by Gustav Mahler to be made available to researchers

Berlin’s revolutionary rent cap — success or flop?

· January 23, 2021 ·

As of Tuesday, the German capital is one year into its five-year "rent freeze," and the data collected so far has given both opponents and supporters fuel for their arguments. A survey published last week by property ad portal ImmoScout24 found that while Berlin's average rent has indeed dropped in the past year, by 7.8%, the number of new flats on the market eligible for a rent reduction had dropped too — by some 30%. That has had a major effect on the competition for new apartments, ImmoScout24 said, with an average of 214 people answering each rental advert in January 2021, compared to 128 in the same month last year. Many cities around the world have some kind of rent control measures in place, but Berlin's rent cap law, in effect since February 2020, is unique. It meant that rents for 90% of Berlin's apartments were frozen for five years at the level they were at in June 2019. New rental contracts could not be above that level, and as of November 2020, any existing rents … [Read more...] about Berlin’s revolutionary rent cap — success or flop?

Full list of businesses now open including pubs, hairdressers and cinemas

· July 5, 2020 ·

THOUSANDS of pubs, restaurants, hairdressers and bingo halls across England are now open as lockdown measures are eased. July 4 marked the start of the phase three of Boris Johnson's plan to get the country back to some normality while also trying to limit the spread of the coronavirus. Brits can get haircut, watch a blockbuster film and go to church from this weekend as long as the businesses are Covid-19 secure. It means pubs and restaurants will be limited to table service , while hairdressers will have to wear visors as they work . Firms will also have to collect contact details from customers to help NHS Track and Trace to control the spread of the virus. But Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned that unlocking the nation relies a lot on the "British public to use their common sense". And if the number of positive coronavirus cases look like they could be getting out of control, local lockdowns will be put in place, like in Leicester . But it won't … [Read more...] about Full list of businesses now open including pubs, hairdressers and cinemas

Mars Perseverance’s parachute carried secret NASA message

· January 24, 2021 ·

The enormous orange and white parachute deployed by NASA's Perseverance rover to land on Mars contained a secret message, thanks to a puzzle lover on the spacecraft team. Systems engineer Ian Clark used a binary code to spell out "dare mighty things'' — a line from former US President Theodore Roosevelt — in the orange and white strips of the 70-foot (21-meter) parachute. He also included the GPS coordinates for the mission's headquarters at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. This combination of images from video made available by NASA shows steps in the descent of the Mars Perseverance rover as it approaches the surface of the planet Mars rover message encoding was 'super fun' Clark, a crossword hobbyist, came up with the idea two years ago. Engineers wanted an unusual pattern in the nylon fabric to know how the parachute was oriented during descent. Turning it into a secret message was "super fun," he said Tuesday. Only about six people knew … [Read more...] about Mars Perseverance’s parachute carried secret NASA message
