UN report warns governments ‘nowhere close’ to climate targets
A UN climate change report has found that global efforts to reduce CO2 emissions "fall far short of what is required" and that nations must "step up" to fulfil promises made under the Paris agreement. In a stark warning ahead of a make or break COP26 climate conference in Glasgow later this year, countries were criticised over their emission reduction plans - known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) - and urged to make "more ambitious" commitments. Following a legally binding international treaty on climate change signed in Paris in 2015, almost 200 countries set a goal of limiting global temperature rise by 2C - or ideally 1.5C - by the end of the century. Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player 'It's too late to avoid climate change' The Initial NDC Synthesis Report looked at how close 75 of those countries - representing approximately 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions - were to meeting those targets. Brits told ‘don’t wreck this now’ with even one trip or lockdown will be extended
Brits were tonight sent a stark warning not to "wreck" lockdown after "worrying signs" that cases are rising in 20% of areas in England. Jonathan Van-Tam used a Friday night No10 press conference to warn lockdown could be extended if people "relax" too much over a sunny weekend. Speaking after one in five of England's council areas saw a rise in cases, the Deputy Chief Medical Officer said: "Please don’t be tempted to think ‘well, one home visit might be all right now, weather ’s getting better, going to be a nice weekend. "'One small gathering in your house won’t really matter.’ I’m afraid it does. “There are some worry signs that people are relaxing, taking their foot off the brake at exactly the wrong time. “It’s a bit like being 3-0 up in a game and thinking ‘we can’t possibly lose’. But how many times have you seen the other side take it 4-3? “Do not wreck this now. It is too early to relax. Just continue to maintain discipline and hang on just a few more months. … [Read more...] about Brits told ‘don’t wreck this now’ with even one trip or lockdown will be extended
Dad who murdered baby daughter by shaking her to death jailed for at least 14 years
A dad who murdered his five-month-old baby daughter by shaking her to death after a 'difficult afternoon looking after her' has been jailed for at least 14 years. Philip Peace, 43, of Dudley, was convicted of the killing after a five-week trial at Birmingham Crown Court. During proceedings, jurors heard how the defendant's daughter Summer Peace had suffered serious injuries, including fractured ribs, retinal bleeding and a catastrophic brain injury, while in his care. Peace had been alone looking after his baby on September 8, 2017, when he called 999, telling the operator she had become unresponsive. Paramedics arrived at the address in Dudley where they began efforts to resuscitate the youngster. Summer was taken to hospital but life support was withdrawn the next day, as it became clear nothing could be done to save her. A judge told Peace what he had done 'will cast a long shadow above you and your family for the rest of your life,' Birmingham Live reports. … [Read more...] about Dad who murdered baby daughter by shaking her to death jailed for at least 14 years
