A 44-year-old Florida man has been charged with animal abandonment after a 6-month-old female pit bull was found deserted inside a dumpster last month, police say. The young pup, now called Daisy, was discovered by waste management who were assigned to empty two bins at the Speedway Gas Station in Bradenton at approximately 3:45 p.m. on June 10. A staff member spotted the dog just before attending to the second dumpster, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office . "I saw a little head pop up. So that's when I ran around and I saw the puppy in there," worker Daniel Cormier told 8 On Your Side (WFLA). Daisy was still inside an animal cage. The dog was still alive but did not have a microchip to help identify its owner. ABC7 reported the store manager brought the pit bull into the gas station and gave it food before calling the local authorities. The Manatee County Animal Services was contacted and took custody of the dog. Alongside the animal rescue agency, the … [Read more...] about Florida man left his 6-month-old pit bull called Daisy in gas station dumpster, sheriff’s office claims

Lung cancer patients could survive twice as long after NHS approves ‘pioneering’ drug
Lung cancer patients could survive twice as long after a “pioneering” drug was approved on the NHS. Around 550 patients a year with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who have already undergone both chemotherapy and radiotherapy will benefit from the new treatment. Clinical trials of Durvalumab, manufactured by AstraZeneca , found it can double the overall time someone can survive with the aggressive form of lung cancer from two and a half to five years. NHS England reached a deal with the manufacturer to roll out the drug after it was approved by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice). Nice said it recommended the treatment for use after clinical evidence found not only does it increase survival time for patients, but also the time it takes for the cancer to progress. NSCLC is the most common form of lung cancer, accounting for around 85 to 90 per cent of cases. Around 48,500 new lung cancer cases are identified every year in the UK. … [Read more...] about Lung cancer patients could survive twice as long after NHS approves ‘pioneering’ drug
Only Fools and Horses actor Patrick Murray ‘cured’ of lung cancer after chemotherapy: ‘I’m over the moon’
Only Fools and Horses actor Patrick Murray has shared a positive update about his cancer battle. The 65-year-old, who is best known for playing wide-boy Mickey Pearce in the beloved sitcom, was diagnosed with lung cancer in July 2021 and underwent an operation in October to remove the tumour. He then went through a round of chemotherapy to prevent the cancer from returning. Murray thanked his followers for their ‘lovely messages’ and explained his health status in several tweets on Sunday, writing: ‘During this chemo , another tumour was discovered in my liver. ‘Luckily for me this cancer was unconnected to the lung cancer and was also treatable. I had a procedure called TACE to deal with this .’ TACE (transarterial chemoembolisation) is a treatment for liver cancer that uses a combination of chemotherapy and an agent (small plastic beads) to block the blood vessels supplying the tumour (embolisation). This treatment is usually used to control the cancer, … [Read more...] about Only Fools and Horses actor Patrick Murray ‘cured’ of lung cancer after chemotherapy: ‘I’m over the moon’
Thousands wait months for powers of attorney to care for loved ones as civil servants work from home
A backlog blamed on civil servants working from home has left hundreds of thousands of elderly and vulnerable people unable to hand over critical financial powers to their loved ones. A third of a million applications for lasting power of attorney (LPA) are still pending at the government agency responsible for registering them, while the waiting time has risen from 40 days to 140 days during the pandemic. Lawyers have warned the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) is no longer “fit for purpose” over the backlog. The OPG admits on its recorded message that applicants should “wait at least 20 weeks” before trying to contact officials. The message warns that because of Covid, “many of our staff are working from home” and that “this is impacting response times in our contact centre and processing lasting powers of attorney applications”. An OPG spokesman insisted the message was in error and needed to be changed and that front-line staff who needed to be in the office to … [Read more...] about Thousands wait months for powers of attorney to care for loved ones as civil servants work from home
Couple halve their monthly bills by ditching renting to live on a narrowboat
Like so many of us, couple Jack and Gemma Cox were struggling to get on the property ladder while spending a load of money on rent. So they took an unconventional approach: ditching renting and moving aboard a narrowboat instead. Jack, a 29-year-old secondary school teacher, and Gemma, a 29-year-old paramedic, were paying £1,000 a month (for rent and bills) to live in their flat in Manchester , all while trying to put as much money as they could into a Help To Buy ISA in the hopes of buying a place closer to Gemma’s family in the Dales. They realised that, looking at an average house price of £280,000, they faced years of strict saving just to be able to afford a property they might not even like. Rather than settling for that path, they binned off their ISA and bought a two-bed beam boat, moored between Manchester and Yorkshire. Their monthly outgoings have been halved as a result. Gemma said: ‘We took a loan out to buy the boat, and even still, the boat was … [Read more...] about Couple halve their monthly bills by ditching renting to live on a narrowboat
Cost of living: Two-child families paying £400 a month more
By Callum Thomson & Noor Nanji Published 2 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Basic goods and services for a typical family with two young children are about £400 a month more expensive than they were last year, new data suggests. Energy prices added about £120 to families' monthly costs as price caps rose and cheap tariffs ended. Pay is rising more slowly than prices , forcing many families to make tough spending choices. The data from Loughborough University is based on what focus groups deem a minimum acceptable standard of living . As well as the essentials needed to survive, like food, rent and heating, the budgets include things the focus groups believe are needed to take part in society, such as internet access, school trips and an annual family holiday in the UK. The figures do not represent an average family's monthly spending, because … [Read more...] about Cost of living: Two-child families paying £400 a month more
‘I’m a single 35-year-old mum and I can see myself falling for a 20-year-old’
Dear Coleen I’m 35 and a single mum of one son. A couple of months ago, I started a new job and hit it off straightaway with a guy I work with. I figured he was younger than me, but our ages never really came up in conversation. He seemed really mature – much more so than my ex, who’s 40 and a huge baby. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I ended up in bed with my colleague after a night out. The sex was great – amazing, actually – but the next morning we were chatting in bed and he admitted that he was only 20. I’d assumed he was about 28, so still an age gap, but not a huge one. He seemed a bit embarrassed and said he felt bad that he hadn’t mentioned it before. I feel so disappointed because I can feel myself falling for him, but just don’t see where this can go as he’s so young. After coming out of a bad relationship, I don’t want to get into something that can’t go anywhere. He’s the first guy I’ve really liked since splitting with my ex. Please help! … [Read more...] about ‘I’m a single 35-year-old mum and I can see myself falling for a 20-year-old’
Newcastle’s Dwight Gayle given ‘Best Trainer of the Month’ award by Eddie Howe despite not starting a game under him
NEWCASTLE striker Dwight Gayle has received the 'Best Trainer of the Month' award by manager Eddie Howe despite him never being named in a starting XI by him. Howe is in the process of revolutionising the Magpies and club captain Jamal Lascelles has spoken of his way to motivate players. He said to The Athletic : "Success is recognised rather than failure punished." As a result, Gayle is among those to win a prize from the fine kitty for topping the training leaderboard. The table tallies performances during possession and small sided matches. Lascelles claims if the 32-year-old loses a practice game "he's miserable." The Grand Tour: Amazon Prime promises to ‘keep sending three old blokes around the world’ in cheeky jibe as show’s future confirmed
The Grand Tour is set to continue for the long run on Amazon Prime, bosses of the streaming service have confirmed today. The Amazon Prime series has been sporadically dropping feature-length specials over the past couple of years, after Covid restrictions meant that Richard Hammond, James May and Clarkson struggled to film worldwide. But they confirmed earlier in 2022 they were back to filming across the globe, as they hit up Europe for a new Scandinavian special . And it looks like they’re just going to keep on coming, as Amazon Studios boss Georgia Brown confirmed there would be much more from the trio ahead. Speaking at Thursday’s Amazon Prime Presents event, she said: ‘The second thing that hasn’t changed at all since [we launched] in 2018, is we’re still sending three old blokes around the world playing with cars and our customers just love it ‘So we will keep doing it, as long as there is a demand for it!’ Their last special – Carnage A Trois – … [Read more...] about The Grand Tour: Amazon Prime promises to ‘keep sending three old blokes around the world’ in cheeky jibe as show’s future confirmed
Belarusian volunteers join Ukraine’s foreign legion as the war passes the three-month mark
Pro-democracy Belarusian dissidents are conducting war games and learning how to fire a pistol and other guns in Poland. Under the watchful eye of a police officer turned private shooting instructor, recruits are preparing to join Ukraine's resistance. Poland has become a safe haven for many Belarusians looking to escape President Alexander Lukashenko's Soviet-style autocracy. The long-time leader has maintained a tight grip on power since 1994. For Belarusians, who consider Ukrainians a brethren nation, the stakes feel especially high. Russian troops have used Belarusian territory to invade Ukraine since the early days of the war, and Lukashenko has publicly stood by his long-time ally, Russian President Vladimir Putin, describing him as his “big brother.” Russia, for its part, has pumped billions of euros into Lukashenko's state-controlled economy with cheap energy and loans. Some of the Belarusian fighters are only passing through on their way to Ukraine, while … [Read more...] about Belarusian volunteers join Ukraine’s foreign legion as the war passes the three-month mark
