A couple are heartbroken after their beloved dog died in kennels after being seized by the police. Eight-month-old Jax was taken from owners Gina Beggs and Marc Culley at the start of the month – but before he was returned to them, the devastated couple were told he’d died of parvovirus, reports Hull Live . Jax was taken away for an assessment on May 2 after cops were alerted that the puppy had a brown nose like a pit bull. Pit bulls are classed as dangerous dogs which need to be assessed to ensure they are not a danger to society, but they are normally returned to the owners if no issues arise. “Jax was taken to the kennels in Hull and we were told he was doing fine and settling in well,” said Marc. “The dog assessor made a comment about Jax being one of the most well-tempered dogs he'd had to seize. "We then got a call on May 11, to say that Jax had caught parvovirus and he'd become poorly. Apparently four or five other dogs in the kennel have also caught it. “We … [Read more...] about Couple heartbroken as 8-month-old dog dies in kennels after being seized by police

MP says old people with big homes ‘should downsize to ease housing crisis’
Older people with large homes could be encouraged to ‘downsize’ to help ease Britain’s housing crisis, ministers have been told. Cherilyn Mackrory, Conservative MP for Truro and Falmouth, called on the Government to provide more options for elderly people looking to move. She told the Commons yesterday: ‘It will come as no surprise to everyone in this chamber that housing is the number one issue for my constituency in Cornwall. ‘Only 2.5% of the UK’s 29million dwellings are defined as retirement housing and the stock is heavily skewed towards housing with three or four bedrooms. ‘The Government must increase the proportion of housing stock for people of retirement age and encourage those over 65 in properties with surplus bedrooms to downsize, those who wish to that is. ‘That will allow younger families to up-size to reduce the pressure to build more houses, and therefore easing the housing the crisis and improving health and wellbeing for older residents.’ … [Read more...] about MP says old people with big homes ‘should downsize to ease housing crisis’

Passenger who landed plane recounts “scariest” moments after pilot collapsed at controls
A Florida man with no flying experience who kept his cool while landing a small plane last week says "the hand of God" was with him after the pilot collapsed at the controls. Meanwhile, a doctor told NBC's "Today" show that the pilot has been released from the hospital, calling his recovery a "miracle." Darren Harrison told "Today" that he was relaxing with his feet up in the back of the single-engine Cessna after a fishing trip in the Bahamas when the pilot told him and another passenger: "Guys, I gotta tell you I don't feel good." "He said, 'I've got a headache and I'm fuzzy and I just don't feel right," the 39-year-old flooring salesman said. "And I said, 'What do we need to do?' and at that point he didn't respond at all." Harrison climbed into the cockpit and saw that the plane was diving, and fast. "All I saw when I came up to the front was water out the right window and I knew it was coming quick," he said. "At that point I knew if I didn't react, that we would … [Read more...] about Passenger who landed plane recounts “scariest” moments after pilot collapsed at controls
FDA authorizes Pfizer’s COVID-19 booster shots for children 5 to 11 years old
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has authorized a booster dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech's COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5 to 11 years old, at least five months after completion of a primary series, officials announced Tuesday. "While it has largely been the case that COVID-19 tends to be less severe in children than adults, the omicron wave has seen more kids getting sick with the disease and being hospitalized, and children may also experience longer term effects, even following initially mild disease," FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert M. Califf said in a statement Tuesday. "The FDA is authorizing the use of a single booster dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine for children 5 through 11 years of age to provide continued protection against COVID-19," he added. Pfizer asked the FDA in April to authorize its booster vaccines for younger children, after it submitted data that indicated their shot was safe and generated a strong immune response in children ages 5 to … [Read more...] about FDA authorizes Pfizer’s COVID-19 booster shots for children 5 to 11 years old
Leiland-James Corkill death: Former care worker found guilty of murdering one-year-old boy she was hoping to adopt
A woman has been convicted of murdering a one-year-old boy who she was hoping to adopt. Laura Castle, 38, had previously pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Leiland-James Corkill who died from catastrophic head injuries in January 2021. She was also convicted on Tuesday of child cruelty. The baby had only been living with Castle for less than five months, and the former care worker last week told Preston Crown Court she admitted killing him to "give him justice". She had originally claimed his death was a tragic accident and he had fallen off the sofa and hit his head at her home in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. But on the day the jury was sworn in last month for her trial, she changed her version of events as she admitted she had shaken the boy after he had not stopped crying at breakfast. She said his head struck the arm-rest of the sofa before he fell off her knee on to the floor. But medical experts told the court the amount of force required to cause his injuries … [Read more...] about Leiland-James Corkill death: Former care worker found guilty of murdering one-year-old boy she was hoping to adopt
