Despite being replaced by Zinedine Zidane after Real Madrid's Champions League elimination and subsequent 4-1 win over Real Valladolid, Santiago Solari ends the 2018/19 season as the best of the three Los Blancos coaches. His 12 wins, four defeats and one draw gave him an impressive 72.54 percentage of points won during his spell, but the humiliation against Ajax proved too much to handle for those at the Santiago Bernabeu. Then came the Frenchman who accumulated 17 of the 33 points available, amounting to 51.51 percent. The worst of the three was Julen Lopetegui, whose tenure now seems a distant memory. He managed just 14 points from his 10 games, taking 46.66 percent of those up for grabs. … [Read more...] about Solari was Real Madrid’s best coach this season

Real Madrid and Real Betis will face off at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday lunchtime as both sides look to close a league campaign to forget. Both Madrid and Betis failed to meet their objectives and, as such, heads are likely to roll; the players have come under scrutiny at Los Blancos, while Quique Setien could be about to coach his last game for Los Verdiblancos. For Madrid, this will mark the end of a dreadful season, where the players have effectively been on holiday for the last couple of months with nothing to play for. Three coaches have passed through the Bernabeu in Julen Lopetegui, Santiago Solari and the return of Zinedine Zidane, with the three having a combined record of 21 wins, 11 losses and five draws from 37 LaLiga Santander matches. Similarly at Betis, once the dream of Europe had gone, the motivation soon left and fingers began to be pointed, particularly at Setien. The 60-year-old has two targets heading into the game at the Bernabeu, though: to achieve a … [Read more...] about Real Madrid vs Real Betis: Two league campaigns to forget
Zinedine Zidane hinted on Saturday that Gareth Bale could make his last appearance for Real Madrid on Sunday after saying he would make changes this summer ahead of the final match of their miserable La Liga season. Bale fell out with Zidane towards the end of the Frenchman's first spell in charge and their relationship has quickly soured again, with the Wales attacker starting just five times since the coach's return in March and left out completely for Real's last two matches against Villarreal and Real Sociedad. Zidane said Bale would be in the squad against Real Betis on Sunday but, asked by reporters if it would be his last game for Madrid, he said: "I don't know, I can't tell you. It's the season finale and next year there are going to be changes. But I don't know what is going to happen." Madrid face Betis at the Santiago Bernabeu in their final match of a campaign that will see them finish third, behind both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, and trophyless after being knocked out … [Read more...] about Zidane the boss as Bale set for final game at Real Madrid
Real Madrid are close to finalising a €60 million deal to sign Eintracht Frankfurt forward Luka Jovic. Los Blancos were known to be in the market for a centre-forward to provide back-up and also competition to Karim Benzema and are now on the verge of tying up a deal for the Serbian striker. Jovic, who has scored 27 goals in 47 appearances for Eintracht this season and was key in the German side’s run to the Europa League semi-finals, is only 21 years old and will lead a summer of rebuilding at the Santiago Bernabeu. According to Sky Germany, the striker will sign a five-year contract with the Spanish side and he could be unveiled as early as next week. Meanwhile, Madrid’s move for Jovic could be partially funded by the sale of Mariano Diaz, who is wanted by Valencia. Mariano returned to Real from Lyon last year in a €21.5m deal, but is not in the plans of coach Zinedine Zidane and is one of a number of players set to be sold by Los Blancos this summer. Reports … [Read more...] about Real Madrid closing on €60million Jovic deal
Suffering relegation to the Segunda Division with a goal in the last five minutes at your own stadium in the penultimate game of the season is a tough blow. Despite that sheer disappointment, the majority of the 13,000 Girona fans inside Montilivi stayed in the stands. And they did not stay to whistle their players but to applaud their efforts during two great seasons in the top flight, their first ever campaigns in LaLiga Santander. There was also the farewell to Diego Godin from Atletico Madrid after nine terrific seasons with the club, which was by far the highlight of the weekend. In a week where the word 'failure' returned to be associated with the team which, only ten days earlier, was receiving high praise for winning their eighth league title in the last eleven seasons, those samples of greatness deserve to stand out for their exemplary nature. Between so much tension and rancour are the behaviours to imitate. On Sunday, Keylor Navas and Gareth Bale will play their final match … [Read more...] about Can Real Madrid fans give Bale a fond farewell?
