Secrets and Lies in the School Cafeteria
Late on a fall afternoon, a skeleton crew staffed the cafeteria at New Canaan High School, in Connecticut. Custodial workers cleaned up the day’s remains while one of the cooks prepped for the evening’s athletic banquet. To hear more feature stories, see our full list or get the Audm iPhone app. A woman entered quietly through the back door, the one designated for deliveries and employees. She wore a jacket over a loose gown. She clutched something to her chest that appeared to be a bag connected to an IV. “What are you doing here?” one of the workers asked. The woman said nothing. She shuffled to her small office. The door clicked shut. The workers exchanged looks. They’d heard that Marie Wilson had been undergoing treatment for breast cancer. She had every right to stay home and rest. Yet here she was, hobbling into the kitchen near sunset, reporting for duty. There would be more days like this one. Days when Wilson endured life’s worst moments—a grandson’s leukemia … [Read more...] about Secrets and Lies in the School Cafeteria
Profile: Viktor Bout
Published 5 April 2012 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing So notorious are the exploits of former Soviet air force officer Viktor Bout that they have inspired a Hollywood film and garnered him an impressively fearsome nickname - the merchant of death. Bout was extradited from Thailand to the US in 2010, after a sting operation by the US Drug Enforcement Agency two years earlier. Agents from the DEA posed as potential buyers from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, known as Farc. That group is classified as a terrorist organisation by the United States. Bout claimed he was simply an entrepreneur with a legitimate international transport business, wrongly accused of trying to arm South American rebels - the victim of US political machinations. But a jury in New York didn't believe his story. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison in April 2012 after being found … [Read more...] about Profile: Viktor Bout
Anti-Semitism: Dramatic rise in 2021, Israeli report says
Published 27 April Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The number of anti-Semitic incidents around the world dramatically increased last year, a study by Tel Aviv University has found. The report identifies the US, Canada, the UK, Germany and Australia as among countries where there was a sharp rise. This was fuelled by radical left- and right-wing political movements and incitement on social media, it says. The report's release coincides with Israel's Holocaust Remembrance Day, which begins on Wednesday night. Known in Israel as Yom HaShoah, the day commemorates the six million Jews murdered by Nazi Germany across Europe during World War Two. The Anti-Semitism Worldwide Report 2021 , by the Center for the Study of Contemporary European Jewry at Tel Aviv University's Faculty of Humanities, is based on the analysis of dozens of studies from around the world, as well as … [Read more...] about Anti-Semitism: Dramatic rise in 2021, Israeli report says
Airbnb boss Brian Chesky: Cornwall risks becoming ‘xenophobic’ without outsiders
Airbnb may have redefined how we travel around the world, but its founder still tries to avoid long flights. “If I have a kryptonite, it’s jet lag,” Brian Chesky admits. “I went to Europe last year for a week, and I couldn’t sleep. And when I got back, I couldn’t sleep for three weeks.” Right now, however, Chesky is looking refreshed and relaxed as he unwinds on a sofa in a Manhattan apartment - rented on Airbnb, naturally. The 40-year-old co-founder and chief executive of Airbnb has been staying in New York for the last few days with Sophie, his golden retriever puppy, in tow in the latest leg of an international tour he started earlier this year. In January, in a committed act of “dogfooding” - Silicon Valley slang for using your own product - Chesky announced that he planned to live permanently in Airbnb properties, switching locations every few weeks. His stints have included a mansion in North Carolina, a striking Frank Lloyd Wright getaway in Michigan, and - uniquely - a … [Read more...] about Airbnb boss Brian Chesky: Cornwall risks becoming ‘xenophobic’ without outsiders

I Went to Disney World
Earlier this month, Walt Disney World began reopening, following almost four months of closure due to the pandemic. I flew to Orlando to experience the magic. The week I arrived, Florida had registered the highest single-day case count of any state thus far. In Orlando’s airport, I felt a vague sense that Floridians considered such statistics a source of secret pride, as if they had set a record for fattest alligator or ugliest serial killer or most senior citizens in a golf cart. The airport where I had started my day, in Connecticut, had required masks, and everyone wore them. Here in Florida, some passengers went totally unmasked, but most wore masks in a defiant fashion, either slung under their chin or with their nostrils gaping out over the top, sucking and spewing potentially viral particles with every breath. A friend who lives a couple of hours away in St. Petersburg likens this latter style to “wearing a condom that covers only the shaft.” Disney World is in Florida only … [Read more...] about I Went to Disney World
A ‘Hunger Games’ Theme Park Signals the Death of the Disney Dream
It probably won’t involve violently slaughtered children, but you never know. The Hunger Games , The New York Times is reporting , may soon go the way of Harry Potter and Cinderella : The trials and triumphs of Katniss Everdeen are becoming what The Hunger Games ’s distributor, Lionsgate, calls “location-based entertainment,” and what the rest of us call a theme park. Actually, a series of theme parks, per the report—with individual rides that might be licensed to existing locations. (A Capitol train-esque roller coaster? Check. A be-simulated hovercraft tour of Panem? Check.) As for the theme parks themselves, there are currently two of them being planned for the U.S. (near Atlanta) and China (near Macau). They’ll join a pre-existing Lionsgate zone at Motiongate , a $3 billion entertainment complex currently under construction in the United Arab Emirates. Lionsgate also has attractions based on Divergent , Step Up , Now You See Me , and Twilight in … [Read more...] about A ‘Hunger Games’ Theme Park Signals the Death of the Disney Dream
Buffalo shooting: Sites yank videos faster, but not by much
Social platforms have learned to remove violent videos of extremist shootings more quickly over the past few years. It's just not clear they're moving quickly enough. Police say that when a white gunman killed 10 people and wounded three others — most of them Black — in a “racially motivated violent extremist” shooting in Buffalo Saturday, he live-streamed the attack to the gaming platform Twitch , which is owned by Amazon. It didn’t stay there long; a Twitch spokesperson said it removed the video in less than two minutes. That's considerably faster than the 17 minutes Facebook needed to take down a similar video streamed by a self-described white supremacist who killed 51 people in two New Zealand mosques in 2019. But versions of the Buffalo shooting video still quickly spread to other platforms, and they haven't always disappeared quickly. In April, Twitter enacted a new policy on “perpetrators of violent attacks” to remove accounts maintained by “individual … [Read more...] about Buffalo shooting: Sites yank videos faster, but not by much
