Centrist politician Elisabeth Borne was appointed France’s new prime minister on Monday to become the second woman to hold the post in the country. Borne, 61, who was labour minister in the previous government, succeeds Jean Castex, who resigned earlier in the day. "Ecology, health, education, full employment, democratic revival, Europe and security: together, with the new government, we will continue to act tirelessly for the French people," French President Emmanuel Macron stated on Twitter shortly after Borne's appointment. Macron and Borne are expected to appoint the full government in the coming days. Who is Borne? Borne spoke soon after her appointment, noting the emotions she felt at being selected for the highest office a woman has ever held in French political leadership. “I would like to dedicate this nomination to all the little girls by telling them ‘Go after your dreams!’ Nothing should stop the fight for the place of women in our society,” she … [Read more...] about Elisabeth Borne appointed as new French PM, first woman to hold the position in 30 years

Musk vs Gates: Billionaire feud deepens over Tesla and climate change
Elon Musk on Saturday took a potshot at fellow billionaire Bill Gates’s belly with a crude tweet as part of his escalating feud with the Microsoft co-founder. Mr Musk, the world’s richest man with an estimated worth near $300bn (£233bn), tweeted a photo of Mr Gates alongside a picture of a pregnant man emoji, captioning the post: “in case u need to lose a boner fast.” The tweet followed the Tesla mogul’s apparent confirmation that leaked screenshots of a conversation between himself and Mr Gates were, in fact, authentic. He wrote on Twitter – which he’s trying to buy – that he had not personally leaked the tweets and media must have obtained them from “friends of friends”. In the text conversation, the billionaires appear to be making a plan to meet before Mr Musk asks Mr Gates: “Do you still have a half billion dollar short position against Tesla?” A short position means an investor anticipates that a stock price will decrease – in this case, essentially betting … [Read more...] about Musk vs Gates: Billionaire feud deepens over Tesla and climate change

Foreign aid: UK cuts funding to UN in change of strategy
By James Landale Published 3 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The government is to give billions of pounds less in foreign aid to international organisations such as the United Nations. Instead, the Foreign Office will spend the aid money on individual projects and countries that are UK priorities. The change is part of a new strategy designed to ensure aid spending does more to promote foreign policy. Aid charities criticised the strategy for focusing more on boosting UK trade than ending extreme poverty. Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said: "In an increasingly geopolitical world, we must use development as a key part of our foreign policy." She said the new strategy will ensure the UK's international development work has benefits across the globe and in the UK, improving economic security worldwide and increasing jobs and growth at home. Emma Raducanu pays price for inconsistency with third-round loss at Indian Wells
The Californian sun got the better of Emma Raducanu in Indian Wells on Sunday, in combination with a strong effort from the experienced Croatian player Petra Martic. Raducanu remains visibly short of ideal conditioning after a disrupted few months, in which she has struggled to back up her miraculous breakthrough in New York. Despite producing a magnificent first-set tie-break, she faded physically in the middle of this 6-7, 6-4, 7-5 defeat. Her last few tournaments have seen her suffer a blister at the Australian Open and a hip injury in Guadalajara three weeks ago, preventing her from building any momentum. And though she was only two points away from victory against Martic, serving for the match at 5-4 in the third set, this tournament will go down as another missed opportunity. On the upside, Raducanu has produced patches of terrific tennis in Indian Wells. Sunday's tie-break was particularly magical. One swivelling backhand, played at a dead run, found an angle so … [Read more...] about Emma Raducanu pays price for inconsistency with third-round loss at Indian Wells

Ukraine crisis: Can Africa replace Russian gas supplies to Europe?
By Ijeoma Ndukwe Published 20 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Related Topics Russia-Ukraine war African countries are among those hoping to increase their exports of gas to the European Union, after the EU committed to reduce its reliance on Russian supplies following the invasion of Ukraine. Russia's suspension of deliveries to Poland and Bulgaria over their refusal to pay in roubles, the Russian currency, was a stark reminder of the threat facing the Eurozone. Russia has the largest natural gas reserves in the world and is the largest exporter, accounting for around 40% of Europe's imports. The EU wants to cut supplies by two-thirds by the end of the year and become independent of all its fossil fuels by 2030. However, energy economist Carole Nakhle says that with the combined exports of Africa's big players in the industry - Algeria, Egypt and … [Read more...] about Ukraine crisis: Can Africa replace Russian gas supplies to Europe?
Sweden’s bid to join Nato ‘shows Vladimir Putin’s aggression doesn’t pay’
Sweden on Sunday night joined Finland in announcing its intention to join Nato, demonstrating to Russia that “aggression does not pay”, the chief of the alliance has said. In a move that ends more than 200 years of military neutrality , Sweden’s governing Social Democratic Party announced that the country would submit an application to join. Finland also announced it was applying for Nato membership in a shift that will more than double the alliance’s borders with Russia. “This is a historic day. A new era starts,” Sauli Niinisto, Finland’s president, said at a press conference on Sunday. Sweden’s prime minister, Magdalena Andersson said the best thing “for the security of Sweden and the Swedish people” is for the country to join Nato. “We believe Sweden needs the formal security guarantees that come with membership in Nato,” she added. Echoing those remarks following a meeting of Nato foreign ministers in Berlin, Jens Stoltenberg, the Nato secretary-general, said the … [Read more...] about Sweden’s bid to join Nato ‘shows Vladimir Putin’s aggression doesn’t pay’
