Gordon Banks obituary

· February 12, 2019 ·

Gordon Banks, who has died aged 81, was the best goalkeeper England have ever had and is widely regarded as one of the finest to have played for any side in any era. A World Cup winner in 1966, he also appeared in the 1970 World Cup finals, where, against Brazil, he was responsible for what is often cited as “the greatest save ever made” – a supremely agile effort from a close-range header by Pelé. The scene of Banks’s famous save was Guadalajara in Mexico, where England were playing Brazil in the group stage. Jairzinho, the fast and powerful Brazilian outside-right, crossed the ball after beating the England left-back, Terry Cooper. Pelé, Brazil’s most lauded player, met the ball with a downward, bouncing header, and was already shouting “Goal!” when Banks miraculously hurled himself across his goal, reached the ball with a flailing right arm, and turned it over his crossbar. “As soon as I got my hand to it, I thought it was … [Read more...] about Gordon Banks obituary

What drives writers to drink?

· July 27, 2013 ·

In the small hours of 25 February 1983, the playwright Tennessee Williams died in his suite at the Elysée, a small, pleasant hotel on the outskirts of the Theatre District in New York City. He was 71: unhappy, a little underweight, addicted to drugs and alcohol and paranoid sometimes to the point of delirium. According to the coroner's report, he'd choked on the bell-shaped plastic cap of a bottle of eyedrops, which he was in the habit of placing on or under his tongue while he administered to his vision. The next day, the New York Times ran an obituary claiming him as "the most important American playwright after Eugene O'Neill", though it had been two decades since his last successful play. It listed his three Pulitzer prizes, for A Streetcar Named Desire, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Night of the Iguana, adding: "He wrote with deep sympathy and expansive humour about outcasts in our society. Though his images were often violent, he was a poet of the human heart." He was also a … [Read more...] about What drives writers to drink?

A coward killed my innocent little girl as she sat in a park: Jodie Chesney’s father makes an impassioned plea to end Britain’s knife crime epidemic after the teenage drug dealer who took his 17-year-old away is convicted of her murder

· November 8, 2019 ·

Peter Chesney was out in London celebrating his 39th birthday when he took the call from an unknown man who identified himself as a police officer. 'Something's happening to your daughter, Jodie,' he said. 'We're coming to get you.' Trying to suppress a sense of rising panic, Peter told the officer his whereabouts and made his way with his brother, Dave, through the crowded bar and out onto the street. A police van arrived in minutes, which made things worse. The pair got in and the vehicle sped away. As the van headed eastwards, Peter, bewildered and by now very, very scared, asked questions. What had happened? Where was she? Memories: Jodie with dad Peter. Peter Chesney was out in London celebrating his 39th birthday when he took the call from an unknown man who identified himself as a police officer and told him something had happened to his daughter  The details were sketchy. The joy of six: Tom Brady, 41, gets a kiss from Gisele and celebrates with his children after winning his SIXTH Super Bowl in emotional scenes in Atlanta following the Patriots’ 13-3 victory over the LA Rams

· February 3, 2019 ·

The ninth Super Bowl performance of Tom Brady's illustrious career was hardly his best, but the 41-year-old quarterback engineered a pair of crucial drives in the fourth quarter that helped New England secure a 13-3 win over the Los Angeles Rams to earn his and the team's sixth Lombardi Trophy.  After the win, Brady was greeted by his children Jack, Benny, and Vivian as well as wife Gisele Bundchen, all of whom embraced and kissed the future Hall of Famer. Brady was also met by his mother, Galynn, who recently battled and beat breast cancer in 2016.  'I can't wait to spend some time with my family and my kids and my wife [Gisele Bundchen],' Brady told CBS' Jim Nantz while holding his daughter Vivian after throwing for 262 yards to win his sixth NFL title. 'I couldn't do it without their support. It's just been a great year. I'm so happy for my teammates. This is a dream come true for all of us.'  In a game that began with Gladys Knight's rendition of the Star-Spangled … [Read more...] about The joy of six: Tom Brady, 41, gets a kiss from Gisele and celebrates with his children after winning his SIXTH Super Bowl in emotional scenes in Atlanta following the Patriots’ 13-3 victory over the LA Rams
