Supreme Court emissions ruling against Environmental Protection Agency is major setback for Joe Biden
The latest Supreme Court ruling is a major setback for President Joe Biden, who has committed America to deep cuts in its carbon emissions - a quarter of which come from burning coal and gas for electricity. Justices sided 6-3 against the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) . The same conservative judges which, last week, voted down the Roe vs Wade ruling on abortion rights in America. President Biden had been banking on federal powers through the EPA to curb pollution from power plants. The case brought against the EPA by West Virginia, along with 17 other coal producing states and two coal companies, was about whether the EPA could regulate pollution beyond the "fenceline" of a given power plant using the US Clean Air Act. Advertisement The court has ruled it can't, arguing carbon dioxide, while a greenhouse gas, is not "toxic" and therefore not something the EPA has the power to regulate. Because limiting CO2 emissions could also … [Read more...] about Supreme Court emissions ruling against Environmental Protection Agency is major setback for Joe Biden
G7 summit: Leaders explore Russian oil price cap
US and French officials confirmed that leaders at the G7 summit had made progress Monday on setting a price cap on Russian oil imports to curb Moscow's energy revenue. News of plans for ramped-up sanctions affecting oil and Russia's military machine emerged as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the summit by videolink. "The dual objectives of G7 leaders have been to take direct aim at [Russian President Vladimir] Putin's revenues, particularly through energy, but also to minimize the spillovers and the impact on the G7 economies and the rest of the world," Reuters news agency reported an official as saying on the sidelines of the summit. As the summit talks got underway, the United States also said sanctions would target Russia's defense industry in a bid to hamper the effectiveness of the Russian military. Zelenskyy appeared on a television screen next to leaders' round table at the secluded Schloss Elmau luxury hotel. He asked the group for anti-aircraft … [Read more...] about G7 summit: Leaders explore Russian oil price cap
Supreme Court limits Biden’s power to cut emissions
By Esme Stallard Published 1 hour ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has lost some of its power to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The landmark ruling by the US Supreme Court represents a major setback to President Joe Biden's climate plans. He called it a "devastating decision" but said it would not undermine his effort to tackle the climate crisis. The case against the EPA was brought by West Virginia on behalf of 18 other mostly Republican-led states and some of the nation's largest coal companies. They were challenging whether the agency has the power to regulate planet-warming emissions for state-wide power sectors or just individual power plants. These 19 states were worried their power sectors would be regulated and they would be forced to move away from using coal, at a severe economic cost. In a … [Read more...] about Supreme Court limits Biden’s power to cut emissions
Irish election: Green Party divided on coalition government
By Shane Harrison Published 4 May 2020 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The Green Party’s decision to enter formal talks with Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael makes a new coalition government in the Republic of Ireland more likely, but by no means certain. More than seven weeks after the general election there is a growing sense during these Covid-19 times, with extraordinary decisions having to be taken, that a new as opposed to a caretaker government is needed. It is known that the Greens were divided on the issue with the party leader Eamon Ryan, a former cabinet minister, keener on going into government than the party’s deputy leader, Catherine Martin. His wing of the party believes there is now a great opportunity to implement policies to deal with green issues and global climate change. Others in the party have serious reservations about whether the Greens will … [Read more...] about Irish election: Green Party divided on coalition government
