Billionaire MacKenzie Scott marries teacher 2 years after split from Amazon’s Jeff Bezos

· March 8, 2021 ·

The billionaire ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has married a science teacher. MacKenzie Scott, who is the 22nd richest person in the world, has tied the knot with Seattle teacher Dan Jewett. The marriage was mentioned in a letter to The Giving Pledge, an organisation which encourages ultra-rich people to give away their billions. "Dan is such a great guy, and I am happy and excited for the both of them," Bezos said in a statement. Jewett said he would be signing on to Scott's commitment to give away most of her wealth. Since Scott, 50, split from the Amazon founder after 25 years of marriage in 2019 and became worth $53billion (£38billion) according to Forbes, she has set about donating. Everyday sexism is real: I’ve been spat at, followed and assaulted since I was 14 – things need to change

· March 8, 2021 ·

WALKING down the pavement, my heart pounding, I tried to keep my eyes on the floor. A group of men on the opposite side of the street were leering and shouting at me, making hand gestures, exchanging loud comments about my developing breasts. I was 14, and it was one of my earliest experiences of street harassment. It was the first time I’d felt really unsafe because I was a girl, but it wouldn’t be the last. I’d go on to be followed home, chased and spat at. A man would later masturbate near me on the bus while he stared intensely into my horrified eyes, grinning. A senior colleague at my first ever holiday temp job would send me inappropriate emails. Eventually, I’d be sexually assaulted a number of times in my twenties. I’d go on to start a campaign against sexism , only to be deluged with hundreds of rape and death threats. Men would compete to come up with the most disgusting ideas, sending me messages about using pieces of furniture to give me internal … [Read more...] about Everyday sexism is real: I’ve been spat at, followed and assaulted since I was 14 – things need to change

Asia’s ‘Milk Tea’ activists cross borders for democratic change

· January 8, 2021 ·

Solidarity between pro-democracy advocates has been gaining momentum across Asia in the last couple of months, both in cyberspace and in the streets. The informal Milk Tea Alliance unites like-minded political activists from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand and Myanmar. Although their agendas at home vary, protesters clashing with riot police in Myanmar can relate to Thais demanding reform of the monarchy. Hong Kongers contesting Beijing’s National Security Law , meanwhile, can resonate with Taiwanese resisting Chinese mainland encroachment. Thitinan Pongsudhirak, a professor of political science at Thailand's Chulalongkorn University, told DW that the growing transnational movement "has aligned the aspirations of young demographics across Asia, favoring democratic norms and values against authoritarianism in their countries and beyond." How did the Milk Tea Alliance come about? In recent months, young pro-democracy activists in Asia have shown how online activism can morph into … [Read more...] about Asia’s ‘Milk Tea’ activists cross borders for democratic change
