Extinction Rebellion activists are plotting to disrupt this week’s London Fashion Week in protest at the harm the industry causes to the environment. They are in talks with Safia Minney, founder of sustainable clothing label People Tree, to target Britain’s biggest fashion event. Yesterday Miss Minney criticised ‘fast fashion’ – cheap clothing that is thrown away after being worn only a few times – and backed the protest. Activists are expected to try to bring traffic to a halt near venues and hold a mock funeral to publicise their claim that the industry is responsible for around 10 per cent of total global emissions. The rise of minimalist travel: Millennial couple quit their jobs to travel the world for a year with just ONE carry-on bag each
A millennial couple have revealed why they have quit their jobs to travel the world with just one carry-on bag of luggage each. Alexandra Connors, 32, and her boyfriend Matt have been subscribing to the idea of 'minimalist travel' since 2017, when Alexandra walked 922 kilometres across Spain with nothing except the 10 kilograms she could carry on her back. 'After returning home to Sydney we started exploring the idea of living with less stuff,' Alexandra - who lives in Sydney's Northern Beaches - told Daily Mail Australia. Now, the couple are set to take on a global adventure with just seven kilos of luggage each - or the equivalent of two carry-on bags. R Kelly’s back-up singer ‘saw him having sex with 15-year-old Aaliyah on his tour bus’ documentary claims
R Kelly's back-up singer saw him having sex with 15-year-old Aaliyah, a new documentary has claimed. In Lifetime's upcoming Surviving R. Kelly, which airs Thursday, Jovante Cunningham claims to have witnessed the then 27-year-old commit statutory rape on the teen. Looking back on being on the road with Aaliyah, she said, as reported by People. 'On a tour bus, there really aren’t many confined spaces. When you get on the bus there are bunks and so these bunks have little curtains you can pull at night if you don’t want anybody to see you sleeping.' Thanks to Extinction Rebellion, we’re experiencing a climate culture change
In the Mall, up Whitehall, or crossing Trafalgar Square early this morning, the climate activists looked like rush-hour office workers and civil servants – mainly 30 to 50-year-olds, with no dreadlocked tree-huggers, SWP banners or black-masked anarchists looking for a punch-up. Chanting about the climate emergency, frankly, they seemed a bit sheepish, not used to it. Their ordinariness makes Extinction Rebellion, or XR, especially effective: farmers, scientists, doctors, Cumbrians and other local platoons stand at the 12 key roadblocks. After their successful capture of central London in April, local cells or “affinity groups” all over the country have trained and planned for this protest. Deciding who would be “arrestable” for highway obstruction – and who wouldn’t be, because of jobs or young families – they were primed to expect a tougher police response after rightwing press complaints against the friendly policing last April, when … [Read more...] about Thanks to Extinction Rebellion, we’re experiencing a climate culture change
Exxon wins first climate change lawsuit against a major oil company as judge rules they did not mislead investors
Exxon Mobil Corp on Tuesday scored a win in a closely-watched case after a judge ruled that the company did not hide the true cost of climate change regulation from investors. Justice Barry Ostrager in Manhattan Supreme Court ruled that New York Attorney General Letitia James failed to produce any evidence that investors were misled. The case, filed in October 2018, was the first of several climate change lawsuits against major oil companies to go to trial. 'Nothing in this opinion is intended to absolve Exxon Mobil from responsibility for contributing to climate change through the emission of greenhouse gases,' he added. 'But Exxon Mobil is in the business of producing energy, and this is a securities fraud case, not a climate change case.' Exxon Mobil Corp. hailed the ruling in a trial that it said stemmed from a 'baseless investigation.'
