The developed world has largely eliminated the opaque pea-souper smogs which marinaded city streets in dangerous toxins until the mid-20th century, but serious air pollution problems remain. In the UK, recent reassessment of the scale of the problem revealed 64,000 deaths were attributed to poisonous air in 2015, and across Europe it is believed more people now die from air pollution than from smoking. So is our air actually getting worse, or have we become better at assessing the damage? We’ll tell you what’s true. You can form your own view. Our former dependence on coal in the home and for industry meant emissions of black smoke were up to 50 times higher in the decades before the clean air act of 1956 than they are today. During the great London smog of 1952, 4,000 people … [Read more...] about Is air pollution actually getting worse in Britain?

An Assembly Member has posted a two-minute video on Facebook arguing that climate change is not a problem. UKIP's Neil Hamilton posted his video arguing “there is no climate change problem” in response to the Welsh Government's decision to declare a climate emergency. The Welsh Government says that climate change threatens Wales' health, economy, infrastructure and natural environment and wants to trigger "a wave of action". Mid and West Wales regional AM Mr Hamilton, who was elected in 2016, passionately disagrees. We have gone through his video to point out all the things he's got wrong - or has missed out. Claim #1 "We have had many predictions of imminent disaster from 'so-called' scientists...none of them have yet been proved right" Let us take this in two parts. Firstly, who are these "so-called scientists"? You may be under the impression from Mr Hamilton that these are crack pots in sheds making these predictions. They are not. The last big report by the UN … [Read more...] about Politician posts rant denying climate change

Commuters were late for work for the second day in a row as environmental campaigners blocked city centre roads, causing traffic tailbacks. Extinction Rebellion protesters blocked Upper Parliament Street and Maid Marian Way during the morning rush hour, having previously pledged to "bring the entire city to a standstill". So far this week, they have caused disruption in Collin Street on Monday evening (April 15) and spent around an hour in London Road on Tuesday morning, April 16. The campaigners stood in the two roads with a banner and megaphone for five and six-minute intervals protesting about the state of the environment. Commuters told Nottinghamshire Live the action left them late for work, just a day after one worker feared losing his job after being caught up in the disruption. Hollie Gilbert, 28, of Ilkeston, who works in dentistry in Carlton, said: “It’s just ridiculous - it’s selfish. "I was supposed to be there at 8.45am. They are going to lose me some … [Read more...] about Commuters late for work again as environmental campaigners cause traffic chaos
BERLIN — Germany’s diesel civil war has turned into a fake news fight. The driver is a claim by 107 German lung specialists that fears about the health impact of vehicle exhaust pollution are overblown. Dieter Köhler, the doctor who led the initiative, told German television network ARD that current EU air quality limits make no sense and should be reformed. The group’s comments were contested by the German Association of Pulmonologists, Sleep and Respiratory Doctors (BdP), the leading medical professional organization for respiratory disorders, which dismissed the claim as being "in clear contradiction” of long-standing positions on the health impact of air pollutants. The contention from the doctors led by Köhler has reignited a long-running feud within the coalition government over how to deal with polluting diesel cars — one of the leading sources of nitrogen oxides (NOx) that cause smog. Both sides want to protect the powerful car … [Read more...] about Dueling doctors poison Germany’s diesel car debate
