MOVIE director Jared Hess was just six years old when a series of bombings rocked the Mormon Church in America. He was living in London, his dad was bishop of the Hyde Park Ward of Latter-day Saints, and Jared had no idea then that events halfway around the world would hang over his life. Two people were killed, a community was terrified and a global movement was questioned - yet few of those involved have spoken about it since. Now Jared, the man behind comedy films Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, has made a groundbreaking Netflix series about the story behind the killings in Salt Lake City, Murder Among the Mormons. New Zealand: New tsunami warning after third earthquake hits
A magnitude 8 earthquake struck off the northeastern coast of New Zealand early on Friday, the National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) said, triggering tsunami warnings. The powerful quake, which hit just before 9 a.m. local time (2000 GMT Thursday) off the Kermadec Islands (1,000 km/621 miles northeast of New Zealand), followed earlier 7.4 and 7.2-magnitude quakes. People in Northland, the East Cape and on Great Barrier Island, as well as anyone near coast from the Bay of Islands to Whangarei, from Matata to Tolaga Bay, must "move immediately" to higher ground or as far inland as possible, NEMA said. The authority said it "expected strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges" at the shore. "Strong currents and surges can injure and drown people. There is a danger to swimmers, surfers, people fishing, small boats and anyone in or near the water close to shore," NEMA said in a statement. Escaped convict lands himself back in prison after coming out of hiding to buy a video game
A fugitive armed robber has landed himself back in prison after coming out of hiding to buy the new Call Of Duty game. Escaped convict Clint Butler assaulted two police officers and had to be restrained on the ground after he was stopped in Birmingham city centre on 13 January. Bodycam footage shows him kicking one officer in the groin and punching another in the face before being held down by the officers and security guards who came to help. He escaped HMP Spring Hill open prison last year while serving a 17-year extended sentence for crimes including robbery and firearms offences. Since fleeing the prison at around midnight on 28 November, he has been classed as wanted by police. Myanmar protesters persist following deadliest day
Protesters again took to the streets in cities and towns across Myanmar on Thursday, following the deadliest day thus far in ongoing demonstrations opposing a military coup. At least 38 people died in anti-coup protests Wednesday, according to the United Nations special envoy Christine Schraner Burgener. Video footage from several cities and towns showed police firing live rounds into crowds of protesters. On Thursday, there were reports of security forces breaking up demonstrations in Yangon with tear gas and gunfire. There were no immediate reports of casualties. Yangon protesters hung sheets on lines across the street to block the line of sight for police aiming their guns, Reuters news agency reported. Local journalist Cape Diamond tweeted a video from Yangon showing protesters encountering a wall of tear gas. Harrowing footage shows Melissa Moore wiping up William 'Billy' Peters' blood three days after he was gunned down in Portland , Oregon . In the clip, the heartbroken woman can be seen wiping up her fiancé's blood with her white shirt from the pavement as she cries in the street. Next to her, there are also two small canvas with blood hand-prints. William Peters and another man, Adam Arrambide, were shot outside the Acropolis Steakhouse strip club in Southeast Portland on Saturday night. Peters died at the scene and Arrambide died Sunday at the hospital, Portland Police said. The suspect left the scene before police arrived, KOIN reports.
