Hundreds bravely came together to celebrate Pride despite living in a country which has outlawed their sexualities. It has been illegal to be gay in the Kingdom of Eswatini, formerly called Swaziland, since the Brits colonised the African nation in the 1800s. Campaigner Mangaliso Mndzebele told Metro.co.uk the country, one of three monarchies left on the continent, has historically seen LGBTQ+ people as ‘satanic’. Former prime minister Maphevu Dlamini said in 2018: ‘Being gay is an abnormality and a sickness.’ Most LGBTQ+ people in Eswatini are still living in the closet, local activists have said. The British common law criminalises sodomy between two men and, although it does not specify anything about women, this is seen as a blanket ban on same-sex relationships. The law has not been enforced by police or courts for decades, but LGBTQ+ communities say they still ‘face human rights violations’ in their daily lives. This is because the community fears they … [Read more...] about How people in one of Africa’s last monarchies celebrate Pride even though it’s illegal

The Bristol carnival, which has been digital since 2020 due to the pandemic, usually draws thousands to its celebrations of diversity and culture. Event director LaToyah McAllister-Jones said she was "thrilled" the programme will include features like the school's performance and Elders' Brunch. The full carnival will return in 2023. Ms McAllister-Jones said although the team had hoped to bring "the full, vibrant celebrations of St Pauls Carnival back to the streets this year", ongoing uncertainty around the pandemic had impacted carnival plans and fundraising events. However, she added the important thing was that "carnival season '22 will not go uncelebrated". St … [Read more...] about Bristol’s St Pauls Carnival set to partly return with live events
St Pauls carnival in Bristol celebrates community elders
Published 6 July 2019 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Hundreds of thousands of people have filled Bristol's streets at St Pauls Carnival as it celebrated community elders with the theme 'Our Journey'. The event's colourful procession featured live acts throughout the day showcasing musical genres from reggae to calypso and drum and bass for the crowds of people. The theme this year was chosen to pay homage to the Windrush generation who arrived in England in the 1940s onwards. The West Indian community came together in Bristol to set up organisations and groups to support their new lives in the UK. This year's theme reflected the challenges they faced including racism and inequality which led to the Bristol bus boycott. St Pauls Carnival, which is marking its 51st event, celebrates the impact that Caribbean music, food, tradition, skills and dance have had on … [Read more...] about St Pauls carnival in Bristol celebrates community elders
French soccer tournament celebrates diversity, fights racism
An amateur soccer tournament in France aimed at celebrating ethnic diversity is attracting talent scouts, sponsors and increasing public attention, by uniting young players from low-income neighborhoods with high-profile names in the sport. The National Neighborhoods Cup is intended to shine a positive spotlight on working-class areas with large immigrant populations that some politicians and commentators scapegoat as breeding grounds for crime, riots and Islamic extremism. Players with Congolese heritage beat a team with Malian roots 5-4 on Saturday in the one-month tournament's final match, held at the home stadium of a third-division French team in the Paris suburb of Creteil. The final was broadcast live on Prime Video. The event competition grew out of local tournaments modeled after the African Cup of Nations that have been held in recent years in suburbs and towns across France where former immigrants with African backgrounds have lived for years or … [Read more...] about French soccer tournament celebrates diversity, fights racism

Platinum Jubilee: Queen triggers lighting of Jubilee beacons across UK
The Queen has made her second appearance of the day as she triggered the lighting of the principal Jubilee beacon at Windsor Castle. At the same time thousands of beacons were lit in villages, towns and cities across the UK to honour the Queen's 70-year reign. Her Majesty started the ceremony from the quadrangle at Windsor Castle, with the Duke of Cambridge representing his grandmother, alongside other members of the Royal Family, at Buckingham Palace, the site of the "Tree of Trees" principal beacon. Although traditionally the principal beacon would be set on fire, this year it took the form of a near-70ft light installation. At Windsor Castle, the Queen, wearing a green jacket, gloves and glasses, pressed the quadrangle to start the lighting of the Jubilee. As she walked from the castle's sovereign entrance into the Quadrangle, the Queen was greeted by more than 100 people who live within the walls of the royal home and were invited to the event. Chief Yeoman … [Read more...] about Platinum Jubilee: Queen triggers lighting of Jubilee beacons across UK
Snakes, swamps and whisky: the British explorers who went on the ultimate boys’ own adventure
In the early months of 1972, word passed between the indigenous tribes living in the Darien Gap that a man with mythical powers had arrived in the remote swamplands between Colombia and Panama. He wore a white pith helmet and a clipped pencil moustache and was leading an expedition team of two Range Rovers, 59 men, five women and 28 pack horses through the jungle. He carried enough dynamite to blast swathes of trees to smithereens and at night would use a radio set to call in an Army Beaver light aircraft to drop supplies of petrol and beer, which the remote Indians living in the Darien Gap described as “firewater”. “They thought we had magic,” recalls Colonel John Blashford-Snell . “And told each other the most wonderful stories about us.” Blashers, as he is known, who was then a major in the Royal Engineers, was already considered one of the greatest British explorers of the 20th century. A few years previously he had led a successful expedition, as the first European to … [Read more...] about Snakes, swamps and whisky: the British explorers who went on the ultimate boys’ own adventure

Body cam footage release in Jayland Walker case evokes protest, outrage
Protests and calls for justice followed the Sunday release of body camera footage that showed police officers fatally shooting Jayland Walker, a 25-year-old unarmed Black man. Last Monday, officers in Akron, Ohio, tried to stop Walker's car for unspecified traffic violations, but a chase ensued when he did not pull over, the Akron Police Department said in a statement last week. Police said officers "reported a firearm being discharged from the suspect vehicle." After several minutes, Walker allegedly fled the moving vehicle and police continued to chase him on foot. "Actions by the suspect caused the officers to perceive he posed a deadly threat to them," which made them discharge their firearms, fatally shooting Walker, according to the statement. However, during a press conference on Sunday, authorities announced that Walker was unarmed at the time of the shooting, making him the latest unarmed Black man to be fatally shot by police in the United States. Police released a … [Read more...] about Body cam footage release in Jayland Walker case evokes protest, outrage
