Boots stock market float back on the table as £5bn sale collapses

June 28, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

T he American owners of Boots may revive plans for stock market float next year after scrapping the sale of Britain’s biggest chemist to a Wall Street buyout fund and Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani. Walgreens, which merged with Boots in 2014 in a deal worth £9bn, said none of the offers for the “adequately reflects the high potential value of Boots and No7 Beauty Company”. The Illinois-headquartered company said bidders had struggled to arrange bank loans to buy Boots after financial markets “suffered unexpected and dramatic change”. But a £5bn approach — considerably lower than the £7bn Mr Pessina is said to have wanted — fell through. Ornella Barra, Boots operating chief, wrote to the company’s 56,000 staff saying she was “happy to confirm that it has been decided that Boots and No7 Beauty Company will … [Read more...] about Boots stock market float back on the table as £5bn sale collapses

Ukraine war: What is Putin’s plan now Luhansk has fallen?

By Joe Inwood Published 1 hour ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Related Topics Russia-Ukraine war Once more, Russia advances. Once more, Ukraine pulls back. The fierce and protracted battle that had been predicted for Lysychansk was avoided, according to the regional governor, by a strategic withdrawal. Serhiy Haidai told me: "Russia currently has a huge advantage in artillery and ammunition. They would have simply destroyed it from a distance, so there was no point in staying." That does seem to tally with Russian accounts of the capture of the city, seemingly moving in unopposed. Videos posted on social media on Sunday show Chechen fighters dancing in the central districts. And well they might celebrate. The capture of Lysychansk means that Russia has essentially taken the entire Luhansk region, a key strategic aim of President Putin's invasion of … [Read more...] about Ukraine war: What is Putin’s plan now Luhansk has fallen?

“Virtual Hajj” is a painful interval—but also Islam’s most global moment yet

June 24, 2020 by www.newsweek.com

On Monday, Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Hajj announced that the annual pilgrimage will, despite the worst fears of billions of Muslims around the world, still go ahead this year. It will however only be open to pilgrims (of any nationality) already within Saudi Arabia's borders, which means that for most of the two million pilgrims planning their visit next month, Hajj will not be possible due to travel restrictions. But this will also open the door to the transformational opportunity of a "virtual Hajj", where live feeds and social media allow more people than ever to participate in the event in some way. Many of those, despite the best efforts of all involved, struggle to afford the Hajj. This means that virtual participation is an important step in widening access to what is a religious obligation for approximately 2 billion Muslims. But it is an expensive obligation. In Bangladesh, for example, the minimum cost of a Hajj package is 315,000 BDT, equivalent to about $3,700—nearly … [Read more...] about “Virtual Hajj” is a painful interval—but also Islam’s most global moment yet
