Two men who ran out of fuel as they tried to bring £200,000 worth of cocaine into the UK on a jet ski have been jailed. Steve Brogan, 36, and Anthony Reilly, 34, had to be rescued from the North Sea before their arrest on 30 September last year. The men, both from Skelmersdale in Lancashire, took their jet ski from the Lowestoft area of Suffolk to a pick up point in the Netherlands. The pair were carrying the cocaine in a backpack when they approached a survey vessel and "asked the crew for some fuel" on their return journey, Ipswich Crown Court heard. Hugh Vass, prosecuting, said their request for fuel was "refused" and at one point they were "pitched into the sea". Advertisement Mr Vass added that one man was showing signs of hypothermia while the other was showing signs of exhaustion. He added that the men were airlifted to hospital in Gorleston, Norfolk, after the Lowestoft RNLI Lifeboat and the HM Coastguard helicopter from Hull helped … [Read more...] about Cocaine smugglers jailed after jet ski runs out of fuel in the North Sea

Man who set up ‘Apology’ phone line consumed by calls from killers and rapists
As an artist, Allan Bridge was troubled by his past. After moving to New York in 1977 and before turning to his creativity to make a living, he had struggled to make ends meet as a carpenter supplementing what little he made shoplifting. But years on from his pilfering he was burdened by his petty crimes, wanting to atone for his misdemeanours. He often worried others could sink too easily into a similar life and wanted to offer his own way to help. So in 1980, he posted flyers around Manhattan encouraging people to call a mysterious helpline to offer their apologies. He planned for the recordings to become part of an interactive art project, giving a voyeuristic insight into New York’s most troubled minds. “Attention amateurs, professionals, criminals, blue-collar, white-collar. Get your misdeeds off your chest,” his flyer read promising callers they could “apologise for their wrongs… without jeopardising themselves.” It provided cheating spouses, child runaways, racists, … [Read more...] about Man who set up ‘Apology’ phone line consumed by calls from killers and rapists
How global warming can cause Europe’s harsh winter weather
As Germans shiver through double-digit negative temperatures and more than 80 centimeters (30 inches) of snow in parts of the country, climate science deniers have taken to social media to argue that global warming is a hoax. Their claim — which has been repeatedly debunked by climate scientists — is that extremely cold weather shows that carbon dioxide emissions are not warming the Earth. In fact, the effects of global warming may even have favored the extremely cold temperature. Frigid air, snow hit parts of Europe Winter arrives in February As early as December, experts had an inkling about winter weather conditions this year. The polar vortex low-pressure area in the far north became unstable, allowing Arctic air masses to move to Europe. The result: snow, freezing rain and above all, plummeting temperatures in Germany. The sub-zero conditions could hold for the next two weeks.
