Red Bull boss Christian Horner has conceded former F1 race director Michael Masi made one key error during his handling of the contentious finish to last season’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton was on course to secure a record-breaking eighth world title at the 2021 season finale, only for Nicholas Latifi’s crash to trigger a late-race safety car and bunch the field up. The lapped cars between Hamilton and Max Verstappen were initially told they could not overtake the leader, only for that decision to be reversed on the penultimate lap while the lapped cars behind the Red Bull were ordered to hold station. That gave Verstappen one racing lap to overtake Hamilton and pinch the title, which he managed comfortably, sparking jubilation in the Red Bull camp and outcry at Mercedes. Guenther Steiner tells F1 giants to stick to the rules after Wolff and Horner complaints
Haas F1 boss Guenther Steiner says the sport’s complex rules cannot be changed on a whim following lobbying by the bosses of both Mercedes and Red Bull. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has called for more action to combat the porpoising and bouncing of the cars following the major change of technical regulations for 2022. Mercedes have suffered more than most, with the likes of Red Bull’s Christian Horner suggesting Wolff is merely trying to level the competitive playing field following a poor start to the season by the constructors’ world champions. For his part, Horner has called for the newly introduced cost cap to be increased amid the rise in inflation and the cost of living crisis. Ferrari and McLaren have also admitted they are struggling to stay within the $140million limit. However, it is less of an issue for smaller teams like Haas.
