Listeners of Radio 2 were shocked to hear DJ Chris Evans leave the show this morning. A family emergency saw the presenter hand over the running of the show to his sports news presenter Vassos Alexander. Sadly, Mr Evans' mother has passed away. He left the show in Mr Alexander's hands shortly before going on air and made an official announcement through him at 7am. Fans are taking to Twitter to offer their support for Chris and his family, reports Devon Live. Minnie Beardsall, Chris's mother, was 92 and underwent eye surgery without anaesthetic earlier this year. Vassos said: "Chris isn't here. He has been here. But he had to go just before we went on air. But he's left a note for me to read out on air. This is very difficult because he is one of my best friends." His colleague Vassos Alexander, who usually reads the sport on his breakfast show, stepped in at the last minute today. He read a note from the broadcaster to his millions of listeners. Mr Alexander said: 'Chris isn't here. He has been here. But he had to go just before we went on air. But he's left a note for me to read out on air. RUNNERS are gearing up this morning for what could be the hottest London Marathon ever with temperatures predicted to sizzle at 23C. The current record for the marathon is 22.7C in 1996 but forecasters believe this could be broken today as the capital enjoys the last of the heatwave. And the scorching temperatures could feel even hotter for the runners, with the Met Office warning them to take extra care. Spokesman Grahame Madge said: "But a big caveat here is obviously a weather station temperature record will feel a bit different to what it might feel like trackside where you have the warmth coming up from the tarmac and other people. "Trackside temperatures will probably feel even warmer than that, so the advice to runners is to look at the forecast and prepare for the fact that this could be one of the warmer marathons."
