One in 20 eligible children have Covid jabs amid lacklustre take-up
Just one in 20 young children eligible for Covid vaccines have had their jabs, according to official data showing lacklustre take-up across the country. The first figures published since the mass rollout began almost a month ago show less than 262,000 children aged between five and 11 have now received jabs in England - though more than five million were eligible. The mass rollout began almost four weeks ago, since then health officials have repeatedly urged families to come forward. But the figures show little enthusiasm from parents. The statistics for children aged between five and 11 who have had first jabs include those who were eligible since February, because they were in clinical risk groups, or lived with those who were immunosuppressed . Around 500,000 children fell into this category. But the figures show that in total, just 261,867 children aged five to 11, including those in at-risk groups, have had jabs. Children in at risk groups were recommended to … [Read more...] about One in 20 eligible children have Covid jabs amid lacklustre take-up
Nursery fees: ‘It shouldn’t be a choice between baby and career’
By Chris Wood Published 27 April 2021 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Related Topics Welsh Parliament election 2021 "Women should not have to choose between a family and a career." Ceri Campion, 33, from Newport, said this was the stark choice many faced - with limited support available until a child is three. It costs more to put her son Benjamin, two, in nursery each month than her mortgage, while a second child would mean shelling out more than her salary. The BBC asked people what needs change after the Senedd elections, and Ceri wants more help for working mothers. "Benjamin is two and it costs £800 to £900 a month to send him to nursery full-time - £300 more than my mortgage payment. That's three quarters of my wages gone straight away," she said. "Luckily my husband works full-time, otherwise we would not be able to afford for me to work. … [Read more...] about Nursery fees: ‘It shouldn’t be a choice between baby and career’

Private Members Bill ballot: The draw that can make new law
Mark D'Arcy Published 2 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing "Everybody knows the dice are loaded, everybody rolls with their fingers crossed…" I somehow doubt that Leonard Cohen had the Commons Private Members Bill process in mind, when he wrote those lines , but they do amount to an accurate description of the maddeningly obscure system under which a handful of MPs get a chance to bring in the law of their choice. So those considering doing something controversial like bringing in assisted dying or banning "fire and re-hire" employment practices should keep them in mind. The basic rule is that it's very hard to force through any measure without a broad cross party consensus behind it, and the government has any number of ways in which it can kill bills it disapproves of. This week saw the drawing of the Commons annual Private Members Bill ballot, which saw … [Read more...] about Private Members Bill ballot: The draw that can make new law
‘My body, my choice’: Americans scream for freedom and choice amid fury over abortion rights and post-Roe future
Cries of “My body, my choice” filled streets across America as supporters of abortion rights protested their anger at the prospect that the Supreme Court will soon strike down the constitutional right to abortion. Incensed after a leaked draft opinion suggested the conservative majority on the court would vote to overturn the landmark Roe v Wade ruling , activists rallied to express their outrage on Saturday (local time), marching, chanting, waving banners, and screaming for reproductive freedom. In the nation’s capital, thousands gathered in drizzly weather at the Washington Monument to listen to fiery speeches before marching to the Supreme Court, which is now surrounded by two layers of security fences. The mood was one of anger and defiance. READ MORE: What is Roe v Wade, and what happens if it is overturned? First Syria, now Ukraine – Britain cannot backstab its allies over chemical weapons again
It was the hottest night of late August 2013 in a sweltering Paris, as the recently elected socialist President of France, François Hollande, waited in his Elysée office to give an order that would have changed history. Ten days earlier more than 1400 innocent people had been killed in a Sarin gas attack on the outskirts of Damascus. The use of chemical weapons by Bashar al-Assad in Syria, an hour’s flight from the European Union, in a genocidal attack on his own people marked a new turn in 21st century history. France’s conservative President Chirac had played endless games a decade earlier on whether he would or would not stand with the US, UK and most EU democracies (other than Germany) in stopping Saddam Hussein from defying UN resolutions. In contrast, socialist Hollande was clear that the Syrian dictator, now in close alliance with Russia’s Vladimir Putin , had to be faced down. After joint planning with Washington, he ordered Rafale warplanes equipped … [Read more...] about First Syria, now Ukraine – Britain cannot backstab its allies over chemical weapons again
The Double Terror of Being Black in America
I loved strawberry shortcake as a child in New York City. The sliced strawberries, the juice, the softest of cake, that whipped cream. I loved it all individually. And together? Pure bliss. Celestine Chaney loved strawberry shortcake too. A 65-year-old mother and grandmother of six, Chaney took strawberry-shortcake making to another level. She’d buy “those little cake cups,” her son, Wayne Jones, told The Buffalo News . “You cut the strawberries up, sprinkle sugar over them, and leave in the refrigerator overnight. The juice from the strawberries is poured in the cup, and you put whipped cream on top." Chaney went to Tops grocery store on Saturday afternoon to purchase the ingredients for her strawberry shortcake. I’m picturing how Chaney must have intended to take her little cakes out of the refrigerator on Sunday after attending Elim Christian Fellowship. I’m picturing this grandmother closing her eyes and swaying her head as she bites into her cake. Moments feel like … [Read more...] about The Double Terror of Being Black in America
Ngũgĩ in America
A few years ago , heart surgery forced Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, the Kenyan writer and perennial Nobel shortlister , to give up driving. He misses it. He misses getting behind the wheel for a few hours with no end point in mind, randomly exploring the roads. “Like writing a story,” he said. So when I offered to visit and take him for an afternoon drive, he accepted. For reasons unknown to me, my rental car was upgraded to a white Mustang, and Ngũgĩ laughed at the sight of the big American muscle car and then quickly confronted the challenge of sinking his body, clad in a white dashiki with fire-red embroidery, down into the low-sunk seat. He’s 84 now, still flashing an outsize smile but slowed physically by various health issues. “I can’t enjoy cocktail parties with friends anymore,” he said. Our terrain was Irvine, in Southern California, where Ngũgĩ moved two decades ago, joining the faculty at UC Irvine. It’s where he’s spent the last stage of a long literary career as one of … [Read more...] about Ngũgĩ in America
Our Views: Curb on Gulf energy leases serves Russia’s interests, not America’s
When he was in office, many thought that President Donald Trump was too close to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Who would have thought, after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, that President Joe Biden would end up an inadvertent energy czar — for Putin, against the interests of the free world? Biden’s administration is canceling oil and gas lease sales in the Gulf of Mexico and off the coast of Alaska, removing millions of acres from possible drilling. And, as anyone who can read a newspaper knows, when our allies in Europe are being held hostage to cutoffs of Russian energy. And, as anyone who can read a newspaper knows, when the Biden administration is asking Persian Gulf petrostates to pump more oil. This makes no sense. Energy officials in Biden’s administration are working at cross-purposes with our diplomats and military. Much of the domestic discussion is about gasoline prices at the pump, setting records and fueling inflation worldwide. Long-term, there is … [Read more...] about Our Views: Curb on Gulf energy leases serves Russia’s interests, not America’s
