The multi-million pound stars of Manchester United were replaced for a day ay Old Trafford by plucky athletes from North Derbyshire Running Club (NDRC). For five runners defied the rain to take part in the excellent Manchester Half-Marathon, and all enjoyed a successful morning.Pick of the bunch was Dean McLaughlin, who achieved a personal-best (PB) time of one hour, 26.40 minutes and crossed the line as high as 336th from a field of more than 10,000 finishers.Tom Topham also made it into the top 500, finishing 499th after breaking the 1.30 barrier for the first time and clocking 1.29.24, while another PB was recorded by Chris Hunt, who clocked 1.45.55 in 2,344th position.The quintet was completed by Kerry Anderson, who improved on her Chicago Half-Marathon time three weeks earlier by five minutes to run 1.50.46 in 3,225th spot, and Neil Chaplin, who completed his 103rd half-marathon in 2.01.24.Four NDRC athletes also splashed through the soggy conditions at York for the Yorkshire … [Read more...] about Runners were stars for a day at Manchester United

Wayne Rooney has thrown his support behind his embattled former manager Jose Mourinho, telling those Manchester United team-mates he once played alongside that they have under-performed in recent weeks and must take their share of the responsibility. Rooney was speaking after leading his new Major League Soccer side DC United to the ninth victory in 15 games with their new captain who scored both goals in a 2-1 win over Chicago Fire on Sunday. The 32-year-old made his remarks as Mourinho waited for a public show of faith from the United board in their manager who woke on Saturday to reports that he would be sacked over the weekend. Signed on a season-long loan from Monaco, Falcao managed just four goals in 29 appearances for the Reds. He was even worse the following season at Chelsea, scoring once. Daley Blind - The ultimate utility player, United fans were excited about Blind's arrival after his contribution to that Robin van Persie goal against Spain in the Brazil World Cup. The 28-year-old was arguably United's best defender on a technical level but his lack of physicality and pace perhaps counted against him. Returned to Ajax in the summer and has played in all of their fixtures so far this season. Juventus midfielder Blaise Matuidi admits he has 'joked' with Paul Pogba about the Manchester United midfielder's Champions League return to Turin in November. United were drawn with Juventus, Valencia and Young Boys in the group stage and Pogba is poised for a reunion with the team he spent four years with after he left United in 2012. Matuidi and Pogba were reunited over the last week on international duty with France, whose World Cup celebrations continued in Paris after their Nations League win over the Netherlands on Friday night. Pogba and Matuidi have been playing together for the national team since Pogba made his Les Bleus debut in March 2013 and the duo were ever-presents during France's triumphant World Cup campaign. Before the new campaign kicks off next week, the west Londoners will have clocked up an estimated 19,853 miles – some 4,000 miles more than Arsenal, the next most-travelled team.
