Mario Mandzukic, without a minute of competitive football since May, is top of Manchester United’s shopping list in January. The Croatian is more out of favour at Juventus than Paul Simon at an Art Garfunkel gig, and seems set to sit on the sidelines until the January transfer window rolls around, having been left out entirely of the Old Lady’s Champions League squad. United, meanwhile, are woefully short of options up top, with Tony Martial injured, Mason Greenwood a bit, um, green, and Marcus Rashford seemingly doing his best work these days off the left flank. Rumours are rampant that United already have a verbal agreement to sign Mandzukic in January, with the 33-year-old commanding a £9m fee and a £85,000-a-week contract. Ed Woodward always gets what he wants. One might wonder why United don’t go after Edinson Cavani, a younger, more prolific striker, who would also be available for zilch come the end of the season once his contract with PSG is up. … [Read more...] about Football transfer rumours: Mario Mandzukic to Manchester United?

Manchester United ejected a supporter during the 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday because of alleged racial abuse. The club are conducting an investigation and Great Manchester Police have been informed of the incident. A United spokesman said: “We are aware of an incident at yesterday’s game where an individual in the home section has allegedly engaged in racial abuse. The individual was identified and ejected from the stadium. We are currently investigating the matter as a priority. Racism and all forms of discrimination are completely unacceptable and do not reflect the values of our club.” If found guilty, the fan could be banned indefinitely. Somewhat ironically, the Premier League held its No room for racism campaign at the weekend which encouraged fans to report any abuse they heard at matches. The alleged racial abuse follows a series of similar incidents that have taken place since the start of the season. At the end of August, Marcus … [Read more...] about Supporter ejected for alleged racist abuse during Manchester United v Liverpool
The model ex of Manchester United star Jesse Lingard was snapped cosying up to his football rival Jack Grealish this week. While there will have to be an improvement when Chelsea visit Ajax in the Champions League on Wednesday, the good news is that they have discovered the winning habit. This was a slog at times, an imprecise grind, but Chelsea’s persistence brought them a reward in the end. There were 73 minutes on the clock when they finally managed to break Newcastle United’s stout resistance. The ball had found its way to the excellent Callum Hudson-Odoi and the winger came up with his fourth assist in as many games, teeing up Marcos Alonso to lift Chelsea into the top four with his first goal of the season. It had been an uneven display from Chelsea, whose midfield lacked balance without N’Golo Kanté, and there were moments when Newcastle threatened to punish their careless opponents on the counterattack. Eager to build on their victory over Manchester United a fortnight ago, Steve Bruce’s struggling side held their own during the first half, threatening whenever their … [Read more...] about Marcos Alonso breaks the Newcastle resistance to give Chelsea narrow win
The Chelsea manager, Emma Hayes, has called for the Continental League Cup to be scrapped and more Women’s Super League matches introduced. “Get rid of the Continental Cup,” Hayes said before her team’s game in the competition at Crystal Palace on Sunday. “Get rid of it, make more league fixtures. How are we going to get continuity? If you want the Continental Cup play it for Championship [sides]. Sell the Women’s Super League; why are we diluting our product? This competition, that competition. Boom, one league, it’s not difficult.” The League Cup involves the 23 Super League and Championship clubs and a minimum of four group games. A frustration for Hayes is that Chelsea face two away matches in the competition and a league visit to West Ham over the next three weeks, followed by an international weekend. It means a substantial gap between their 2-1 home defeat of Arsenal in front of an impressive 4,149 fans on 13 October and the visit … [Read more...] about Continental Cup has outlived its usefulness, says Chelsea’s Emma Hayes
