Published 12 May comments Comments Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The risk of a recession has risen, analysts have warned, after the economy shrank during March just as the UK had recovered from the pandemic. Higher prices are "beginning to bite", the UK statistics body said , with people spending less and cutting down on car journeys due to high fuel costs. The impact of higher energy bills in April has also yet to be seen. The economy grew by 0.8% over the first three months of the year, but in March it shrank by 0.1% as people cut back. The main boost to the economy came in January, as hospitality and travel industries recovered from coronavirus pandemic restrictions. However, that came before the war in Ukraine and before households began to feel the pinch of higher prices. Trevor Noah: Biden’s Presidency Could Hinge On Rising Gas Prices | The Daily Wire
“The Daily Show” host Trevor Noah said that President Joe Biden’s presidency could stand or fall on whether gasoline prices continue to rise. “It seems like everything these days is more expensive,” Noah opened his segment on Monday. “But there’s one price that people notice more than anything — and that’s the price of gas.” Noah went on to detail how demand for oil and gas dropped precipitously due to COVID-19 related lockdowns. Noah said that even though demand had risen again because of the return to pre-pandemic life, it is not easy for gas producers to simply resume production, and it would take time to return to normal. The segment further found fault with the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), playing a montage of clips from news outlets arguing that OPEC was withholding production increases in order to recoup its pandemic losses. “The big question is, what can be done to lower gas prices?” Noah asked. “Well, the bad news for President Biden is not … [Read more...] about Trevor Noah: Biden’s Presidency Could Hinge On Rising Gas Prices | The Daily Wire
Ads on TikTok and Instagram ‘behind rise in children vaping’
TikTok and Instagram are behind the increase in the number of children who vape in the UK, a new report states. Newer, disposable e-cigarettes are becoming increasingly popular with Gen-Zs, who are exposed to advertising on such social media apps. Costing around £5 each and coming in a wide range of fruity flavours instead of an ashy taste and smell, they attract a much younger crowd influenced by what they have seen while scrolling online. According to the survey carried out for Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) and part-funded by the Department of Health, some 52% of under-18s who vape said disposable e-cigarettes were their favoured product. This represents a dramatic rise on the 7% who said the same thing in 2020. Deborah Arnott, chief executive of ASH, said: ‘The disposable vapes that have surged in popularity over the last year are brightly coloured, pocket-size products with sweet flavours and sweet names. ‘They are widely available for under a fiver – no … [Read more...] about Ads on TikTok and Instagram ‘behind rise in children vaping’

Mum shares how she makes her own butter for 36p to save money – as supermarket prices rise
A mum has shared how you can save money on your weekly food shop – by making your own butter. Jo Rourke, from Manchester , revealed that she would always opt for butter that was reduced or on offer. But – after seeing a pack of Lurpak rising to £5 in the supermarket – she was determined to find a way to save cash. As a result, she decided to create her own for less than 50p, in just minutes, and has shared her technique on TikTok . The 40-year-old started by purchasing a tub of whipping cream in the supermarket last week – which was reduced from £1.20 to 36p. ‘Real butter is astronomically expensive and it seems to be going up by the second,’ Jo told NeedToKnow.online. ‘I love learning new recipes and also teaching my children these life skills. ‘I was browsing the reduced section the other day and noticed there was a really reduced price pot of cream and I did not want to leave it behind. ‘I am not a big fan of cream but had heard about turning it into … [Read more...] about Mum shares how she makes her own butter for 36p to save money – as supermarket prices rise
Fears rise over player ‘burn-out’ ahead of Women’s Euros
Women's footballers are being put at risk of physical burn-out due to "unacceptable" early national team call-ups ahead of this summer's European Championship , Telegraph Sport has been told. Clubs across Europe have expressed "huge concern" at their players' shortened off-season breaks, with the majority of teams involved in the tournament starting their training camps at least 10 days earlier than the opening of the official Fifa international window of June 20. Sources at 12 of the biggest women's teams across Europe all expressed their anger at the situation to The Telegraph , with two club board members saying there was "outrage" at the lack of recovery time since the club season finale, which in some countries came as recently as June 1. England and Italy's squads were among the first to meet up, arriving at their camps on May 30, around five weeks before the start of the tournament and more than two months before the Wembley final. The Lionesses are being given … [Read more...] about Fears rise over player ‘burn-out’ ahead of Women’s Euros
Short Story: O
A yellow taxi circles the airport; mist over LaGuardia; rumor of improvised explosive device; a bald Nigerian hack listening to incensed propagandists on WOR, his cab merging with the vortex; and behind the Plexiglas, an entrepreneurial American capitalist half his age, iPhone perpetually to her perfect pink ear, hair dark as a tiger’s stripe. “You could cut it with a knife,” she says. Having left a message with her lover, she speaks now to her sister. “That much is definite. The bomb is speculation.” To which big sister petulantly replies, “Everything happens to you.” The younger woman’s lover, in a Houston high-rise, listens to the message she left, thinking—he cannot help himself—that her flight isn’t really delayed but that she no longer loves him, the churning in his gut forcing him to pace the apartment. He ignores the window’s glittering panorama for the blank frame of the smartphone in his trembling hand, daring it to ring, demanding that it ring, although her calls do not … [Read more...] about Short Story: O
I’m ‘determined’ to cut taxes, says new Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi
New Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi has said he’s “determined to do more” to cut taxes as he pledged to rebuild the struggling economy amid the worst cost-of-living crisis in a generation. Mr Zahawi, who was appointed to the Treasury top job after Rishi Sunak’s dramatic resignation on Tuesday night, said: “I want to be one of the most competitive countries in the world for investment.” He said corporation tax was the “one tax [investors] can compare globally”, adding: “I want to make sure we’re as competitive as we can be while maintaining fiscal discipline.” Prime Minister Boris Johnson previously announced a rise in the corporation tax rate from 19pc to 25pc for large companies from next April. However, the Chancellor said his priority was to “rebuild and grow the economy” as the UK grapples with surging inflation and the threat of a recession. He said: “We have just come out of the equivalent of a world war. We have to rebuild the economy and return to growth.” Mr … [Read more...] about I’m ‘determined’ to cut taxes, says new Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi
