A Metropolitan Police officer being investigated over the death of Rashan Charles will not be prosecuted. The 20-year-old died on July 22 after he was apprehended by police and at least one member of the public when he ran into a shop in Dalston, east London. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) had been considering a common assault charge against an officer. A spokeswoman said: "The CPS has considered the matter and decided the evidential test for a prosecution for common assault is not met. "We will therefore not be taking any further action regarding this offence." The death of Mr Charles sparked violent street protests in east London, with threats made against police officers. The Independent Office for Police Conduct, previously known as the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), referred a file of evidence to the CPS in relation to one Metropolitan Police officer for a possible charge of common assault. An initial IPCC investigation last year found that after he was … [Read more...] about Met Police officer will not face charges over Rashan Charles death

What is a Ponzi scheme? Like most enduring plans – even criminal ones – it is very simple. A businessman thinks of an eye-catching idea and promises high returns that an investor would never get from a savings account or ordinary share dealing. Once you have convinced investors that your model can work – whatever it is – the swindle begins. This is because the business is fictitious, and even if it did exist it would never pay the sort of returns promised. A Ponzi scheme works because new investors pay the dividends of old ones. Prince Charles has been slammed as "immoral" by renowned scientists in a shocking new book for promoting alternative medicines. Professor Edzard Ernst and Dr Kevin Smith have hit out at the 68-year-old heir in a tome called More Harm than Good?. Charles is lambasted for being a vocal supporter of homeopathy, lobbying health ministers to set up a register of holistic practitioners and making impassioned speeches at the World Health Assembly and British Medical Association. Professor Ernst, who previously accused Charles of "selling snake oil", said: "You can't have alternative medicine just because Prince Charles likes it, because that is not in the best interest of the patients. "The quality of the research is not just bad, but dismal. It ignores harms. There is a whole shelf of rubbish being sold and that is simply unethical." Dr Smith added: "We certainly are very worried about the future king being a proponent [of alternative medicine]. "We should start to think of complementary and … [Read more...] about Prince Charles slammed as ‘immoral’ by scientists: ‘His pontifications do disservice to the truth’
