Normal People star Paul Mescal deserves to give himself a pat on the back after raising more than €70,000 (£61,700) for charity. The 24-year-old actor, who plays Connell in the hit BBC Three series, put one of the character’s chains up for a raffle in a bid to raise money for a mental health charity. And it seems people really do love Connell’s chains as the raffle closed with precisely €70,340 (£62,000) raised. Not only does the lucky winner get to literally wear Connell close to their heart, but they also got a special shout-out from Paul himself. ‘Congratulations Éadaoin !!! Thank you so much to everyone who participated ….70340 euro is a huge ammount [sic] of money and will go a long way in supporting Pieta’s vital services x,’ Paul tweeted once the raffle closed. Paul Mescal has become a worldwide heartthrob since his star turn in Normal People , with even his silver chain becoming a sex symbol. And he isn’t exactly finding the new found attention easy. The 24-year-old has admitted that he has ‘no f***ing idea what’s happening’ after his chain racked up over 180,000 followers on the Instagram thirst account @connellschain. Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, Mescal said: ‘It wasn’t that it was bothering me, but I was like, if there is something that’s gaining this much attention… and it’s an inanimate object. It’s a chain. ‘It’s not something that says lines, it’s not something that has an emotional response to a situation, it’s not something that expresses anything. It’s a thing that’s clipped around a character’s neck.’ The Kildare-born actor added: ‘Between the necklace and being photographed going to the shop.
