SAM TOMKINS won't mind a verbal bashing from the Leeds fans if doublechasing Wigan lift the Challenge Cup for the first time since 2002. The Warriors superstar has been forced to add a thick skin to his explosive talents after coming in for plenty of stick from opposing fans this season. Tomkins, who has scored 19 tries in only 12 Challenge Cup ties for Wigan, was even jeered playing for England against the Exiles at Headingley in June. But Tomkins, 22, said: "The booing from fans isn't a big deal for me and water off a duck's back now. "I couldn't understand it at first. When I wore an England jersey I thought the fans would be behind me. If the England game had been played anywhere else than Leeds it probably wouldn't have happened and it was just a minority of fans. "The same Leeds supporters will probably get well and truly stuck into me at Wembley but there are plenty of others cheering." Alex Murphy, arguably Britain's best post-war player, is one of Tomkins biggest … [Read more...] about Challenge Cup Final: Sam Tomkins ready to silence Rhinos boo-boys

Hull FC beat Warrington in Challenge Cup final thriller as Jamie Shaul’s late try clinches epic comeback
Hull ended a 74-year wait for a Wembley victory as they came from behind in dramatic fashion to beat favourites Warrington 12-10 in a classic final. It is Hull's fourth Challenge Cup triumph but their first at the national stadium as the Wolves suffered their first defeat in four trips to Wembley under coach Tony Smith. The agony looked set to continue for the Black and Whites when they trailed 10-0 after an hour but tries in the last 13 minutes from centre Mahe Fonua and full-back Jamie Shaul brought them level and half-back Marc Sneyd kicked the winning goal to settle a 114th Cup final that lived up to all the pre-match hype. Sneyd was named the Lance Todd Trophy winner as man of the match, two years after being substituted in Castleford's defeat by Leeds, and his joy was in sharp contrast to Warrington's goalkicker Kurt Gidley, whose simple penalty miss early in the second half proved costly. Hull FC's Gareth Ellis lifts the Challenge Cup trophy after their exciting … [Read more...] about Hull FC beat Warrington in Challenge Cup final thriller as Jamie Shaul’s late try clinches epic comeback
Featherstone half-back Cory Aston bids to add his own Challenge Cup stories to family scrapbook
Cory Aston grew up listening to stories of Challenge Cup glory from Lance Todd Trophy-winning dad Mark - now he wants to write some chapters of his own. Mark Aston was the key man in the biggest cup final shock in the sport’s history when Sheffield Eagles toppled the mighty Wigan in 1998. Cory, just three at the time, was pictured on his dad’s shoulders on the Wembley pitch after the unforgettable game. On Thursday night, he lines up for Featherstone Rovers as they bid to beat Championship rivals Halifax and book a spot in this year’s quarter-finals. Cory told Mirror Sport: “I don’t remember a great deal about the day in 1998, but my dad has told me a fair bit about it. Young Cory was bursting with pride but playing it cool, we reckon ( Image: League Express) “He told me he was knocked out in the first 20 minutes and doesn’t remember much of the game, which just wouldn’t happen now with the concussion rules. “He plays it pretty cool but the Challenge Cup is … [Read more...] about Featherstone half-back Cory Aston bids to add his own Challenge Cup stories to family scrapbook
Steve McNamara and Tony Gigot earn Wembley redemption as Catalans make Challenge Cup history
Steve McNamara completed his own Wembley redemption by steering Catalans Dragons to an historic Challenge Cup final win. McNamara was the England coach when Kiwi Shaun Johnson’s last gasp try broke their hearts in the 2013 World Cup semi-final, and admitted his mind drifted to that moment in the desperate closing stages. But the Dragons - who won just two of their first 11 matches this season - held firm to lift the maiden trophy in their relative short existence and take the trophy out of England for the first time. McNamara said: “In the last five minutes with the clock ticking down I was expecting it to get to 21 seconds and someone jump out of the line and they score. “I can’t completely sum it up now and it’s a bit surreal. Catalans forward Benjamin Garcia celebrates his first half try ( Image: Getty Images Europe) “I know how much money has been spent by fans trying to get across here, and how people at home were heartbroken that they couldn’t get here … [Read more...] about Steve McNamara and Tony Gigot earn Wembley redemption as Catalans make Challenge Cup history
Remi Casty says Catalans Dragons must use historic Challenge Cup win to grow rugby league in France
Catalans captain Remi Casty wants the Dragons’ historic Challenge Cup win to reshape rugby league in France. Casty’s side became the first non-English team to lift the trophy in its 121-year history on Saturday with over half their victorious team French-born. Casty grew up wearing a Paris St Germain shirt from their ill-fated two-year stint at the inception of Super League, before playing for the Dragons in their 2007 cup final defeat to St Helens. Now the veteran prop wants the Dragons - who received a hero’s welcome at Perpignan airport in the early hours of Sunday morning - to begin a new era for the sport in his home country. Casey said: “The difficulty we have in France is that the perception of rugby league is you just carry the ball, you tackle hard, you give it someone else. Sam Moa takes the ball to Warrington in Saturday's Wembley win ( Image: Getty Images Europe) “It’s not seen as a pretty game in France but we have to try and change this mentality. … [Read more...] about Remi Casty says Catalans Dragons must use historic Challenge Cup win to grow rugby league in France
Liz Cheney and Trump-backed challenger clash at Wyoming GOP debate
False claims about the 2020 presidential election and the House select committee's January 6 investigation featured prominently during the Republican Wyoming primary debate as Representative Liz Cheney faced off against four challengers, including the Donald Trump -backed Harriet Hageman. The debate, hosted by Wyoming PBS , saw Cheney, Hageman, Robyn Belinskey, Senator Anthony Bouchard and Denton Knapp discuss a number of issues ahead of the August 16 primary, including how to deal with rising inflation and infrastructure development. However, it was the 2020 election and the House select committee's investigation into the riot at the U.S. Capitol, of which Cheney is a vice chair, that dominated proceedings. Cheney, who is fighting for her political future after being censured by the Republican National Committee and the Wyoming GOP voting to no longer recognize her as part of the party due to her role on the January 6 panel and criticism of Trump, fought accusations from … [Read more...] about Liz Cheney and Trump-backed challenger clash at Wyoming GOP debate
Liz Cheney spars with GOP challengers over 2020 election, Jan. 6 attack in first debate
Republican Rep. Liz Cheney was able to find common ground with her four challengers for Wyoming's lone congressional seat on issues including voting against the bipartisan infrastructure bill, supporting America's energy systems and reprimanding the Biden administration during their first debate Thursday night. But when it came to topics such as the Jan. 6 committee's findings and the legitimacy of the 2020 presidential election, she found herself an outlier. And Cheney's belief that the 2020 election was not stolen could cost her her seat. Throughout the debate, Cheney, the vice chair on the Jan. 6 select committee, cited recent findings from the committee's hearings and testimony from former President Donald Trump's family and staffers that "there was not sufficient fraud to overturn the results of the 2020 election." She added that it is a "tragedy" that Trump and other Republicans wrongly claimed it was stolen. "If we embrace the lies of Donald Trump, if we tell the … [Read more...] about Liz Cheney spars with GOP challengers over 2020 election, Jan. 6 attack in first debate

Lee Radford hails Hull heroes on breaking Wembley hoodoo with Challenge Cup win over Warrington
Lee Radford hailed his history makers after a Jamie Shaul try, Marc Sneyd’s boot and Danny Houghton’s heroic defence combined to end Hull FC’s Wembley hoodoo. The Black and Whites had lifted the old trophy three times before - but never at the national stadium after seven defeats and a draw there. It looked like being another day to forget when Radford’s side trailed 10-0 with just 20 minutes remaining, having failed to break down Warrington’s resolute defence. But Sneyd then provided three outstanding kicking contributions starting with a 40/20 and creating tries for Mahe Fonua and Shaul. The Wolves managed to find a late response and Ben Currie looked certain to win it for them, until Houghton came up with an iconic cover tackle that forced the ball free. ( Image: Getty) Radford said: “I think that was his 57th tackle of the match and it’s the most important tackle in any game I’ve been involved in. “That is the epitome of the bloke. “If the England coach is … [Read more...] about Lee Radford hails Hull heroes on breaking Wembley hoodoo with Challenge Cup win over Warrington
