A mother who claims she was refused a second smear test has now been diagnosed with stage four cervical cancer. Steph Nally, 29, from Wythenshawe, south Manchester, had been experiencing excruciating back pain on and off for four years when she asked her GP for a test.    However after receiving an all clear diagnoses from her first smear test the mother-of-two developed abnormal bleeding and requested a second test which was this time refused. While it is not clear if the diagnoses was mistaken or disease progressed rapidly after the test, Ms Nally later received the news that she had stage four cancer only months after the initial all-clear result. Women could be offered DIY smear test kits in a bid to improve uptake of cervical cancer screening. The National Screening Committee is considering sending ‘self-sample’ tests to women who do not respond to invitations for screening at a clinic. Cervical cancer screening has fallen to an all-time low. Figures last week revealed nearly five million women are overdue for testing. Instead of going to the GP surgery for a smear test, women could be sent DIY kits Nearly a third of women ignored their latest invitation and are now at risk because they have gone several years without a smear test. A study published last night in the British Medical Journal found the DIY tests were nearly as accurate as those done in a clinic. And they found women who had missed screening appointments were twice as likely to provide a DIY sample for testing as they were to respond to reminders to come to a clinic. Alzheimer's 'is not one disease' and can be grouped into six distinct categories, researchers have claimed.  Scientists reviewed five existing medical studies which analysed more than 4,000 patients battling the memory-robbing disorder. They discovered Alzheimer's could be split into six different groups - depending on how badly patients were affected. And they all had genetic differences. The 18-strong research team, from a host of prestigious universities, hope the findings will bring them one step closer towards an Alzheimer's cure.
