Real Madrid don't show their best side early. They have trouble starting seasons well and in recent years the back to school period is more costly for them than most. Maybe it's due to a lack of motivation with so many games to come, or maybe it's down to a shortage or preparation. Whatever the reason, Madrid have only won their first three LaLiga Santander games on three occasions. Under Carlo Ancelotti in 2013/14 Madrid won with three straight wins, beating Real Betis, Granada and Athletic Club before the international break, but they still ended the season in third place as Atletico Madrid won the title. They did, however, win the Copa del Rey and Champions League. Next it was Zinedine Zidane who achieved it in his first full season. Madrid beat Real Sociedad, Celta Vigo and Osasuna. Throughout that campaign, Los Blancos lost just three times - Barcelona, Sevilla and Valencia - and ended as champions with 93 points, three clear of the Catalans. They also conquered the Champions … [Read more...] about Real Madrid’s poor run before the international break

The reconstruction works currently taking place at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu not only affects the stadium's facilities, but also Real Madrid's relationship with the stands after a disappointing home record last season. It was at the Bernabeu that Madrid said goodbye to their hopes of winning silverware: losing to Barcelona in the Copa del Rey and to Ajax in the Champions League, while their form at home in LaLiga Santander meant they were never really in the title race. Therefore, work is being undertaken at the Bernabeu in all sorts of ways. For Zinedine Zidane, returning to competitiveness in LaLiga Santander is essential and his goal is to once again turn the Bernabeu into a fortress. From their 19 games at home, Los Blancos finished with a record of 13 wins, one draw and five losses. That is 17 points that they missed out on at home alone. When Zidane won LaLiga Santander in 2016/17, Madrid lost just one game at home and that must be the mentality this season too, as they look … [Read more...] about Real Madrid vs Real Valladolid: The works at the Bernabeu
Kevin Gameiro is the only forward in the Valencia squad who the club aren't considering selling. There were rumours linking the Frenchman with a move away earlier in the season, but he has become an integral part in Marcelino's side over the last few months. His goal in the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona proved that Los Che can rely on him to lead the line during the next campaign. However, the same can't be said about Gameiro's other three strike partners. From what Valencia's president and coach have said, it seems like Rodrigo Moreno will be sold this summer if the right offer comes in. There is serious interest from Napoli, while Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have also been linked with a move for the Spanish international. Santi Mina is another frontman that could be leaving the Estadio Mestalla. Celta Vigo want to bring him back to Balaidos as part of any deal that would see Maxi Gomez move the other way. Negotiations between the two clubs are ongoing and Mina is ready to … [Read more...] about Kevin Gameiro to stay at Valencia

Philippe Coutinho returned to full training ahead of Barcelona’s Copa del Rey final against Valencia tonight. Ernesto Valverde’s side are looking to make up for the disappointment of another Champions League capitulation by securing a domestic double, having wrapped up La Liga with three games to spare. Luis Suarez will have no role to play however having undergone knee surgery that ended his season two weeks prematurely. Elsewhere in attack, Ousmane Dembele is a doubt but Coutinho is likely to be available having overcome a hamstring injury suffered on May 12. Brazilian midfielder Arthur is another who is struggling for fitness, with Arturo Vidal in line to start ahead of him. Marc-Andre ter Stegen is unavailable due to a knee problem – but was almost certain to serve as Jasper Cillessen’s understudy on the day with the Dutchman Valverde’s preferred option in goal in cup competition. It could be Cillessen’s last game as a Barcelona player with a … [Read more...] about Barcelona vs Valencia line-ups
