More info Historical dramas are often a mixture of real events and conjured moments for artistic purposes, but where does Darkest Hour fall on the scale? Express.co.uk had the opportunity to ask a man who knew Churchill personally: one of his grandsons, Sir Nicholas. Speaking from his office next to the House of Commons where he’s been an MP since 1983, the 69-year-old felt the film was mainly correct and praised some scenes created for drama. He said: “It’s pretty accurate [when compared to that] remarkable book by George Lukas called Five Days in London, which is about the making of the government of 1940.” Related articles … [Read more...] about Darkest Hour: How historically accurate is it? One day, out of the blue, I received a telephone call from two marine biologists in Wales. As I recall, they said something like “Hello there, Dr. Austad. We are marine biologists who study clams that live a very long time. Would you like to collaborate with us to investigate how they do it?” As a biologist of aging who is perhaps best known for making a wager that the first 150-year-old person is already alive, I get a fair number of crank calls and emails from people who want to live forever—or already know how to live forever and just want my help in spreading the word. Being polite in this case, I recall my answer was something like “Possibly. What do you mean by ‘a very long time’?” “Centuries.” I held the telephone away from my ear. It was a transatlantic call. Maybe I had misheard. “Sorry, I thought you said ‘centuries.’” “Yes, that’s right—centuries.” A few months later, two researchers from Bangor University sat in my office, telling me about the longevity of … [Read more...] about If a Clam Can Live to 500, Why Can’t We?
Image Comics’ space-opera comic-book series Saga imagines a vast universe with strange inhabitants. There’s a telepathic, bald cat who yowls “LYING” at people who don’t tell the truth. There’s a queer, disemboweled ghost who works nights as a sassy teenage babysitter. And there’s a drunken cyclops who writes trashy romance novels, but may secretly be the galaxy’s leading intellectual. In one scene, readers meet an assassin with the armless body of Venus de Milo ; when she casts aside her skirt, she reveals the abdomen of a spider and eight legs clutching different weapons. In short, Saga can seem bewildering; but at its core are simpler themes of love, loss, and growth. The story begins with Alana, Marko, and their newborn daughter, Hazel—a taboo, inter-species refugee family fleeing the intergalactic war between their home worlds. Yet over the dozens of issues released since Saga ’s 2012 debut, co-creators Fiona Staples and Brian K. Vaughan have lent humanity to their … [Read more...] about The Sprawling, Empathetic Adventure of ‘Saga’
Robin Dalton, who has died aged 101, was a journalist, party girl, spy, literary agent, film producer and author; she arrived in London from Sydney 76 years ago and lived at or near the centre of the city’s cultural and social life until her death. Her life would fill three memoirs; the first she wrote aged six, the third at 94. She was born Robin Eakin in Sydney on December 22 1920, the only child of Dr Robert “Jim” Agnew Eakin, a Northern Irish Presbyterian, who ran his surgery from their house, the only private house in Kings Cross, Sydney’s Soho. Robin’s mother, Lyndall, née Solomon, from a Polish-Australian Jewish family, smoked 100 cigarettes a day, cooked lavish and extravagant meals, and thought nothing of inviting strangers to stay. Robin’s memoir Aunts up the Cross (1965) focused on her extended family, which included 10 great-aunts. On first hearing of the title, Clive James said it “sounded to me like a feminist tract about capital punishment in ancient Rome”. When he … [Read more...] about Robin Dalton, fun-loving memoirist, theatrical agent, spy and early girlfriend of the Marquess of Milford Haven – obituary
Archie Roach, who has died following a long illness aged 66, overcame poverty, homelessness, prison, alcoholism and attempted suicide to become a revered singer, songwriter and storyteller, shining a shocking spotlight on the injustices suffered by Australia’s indigenous people. Written directly from his own painful experience as one of the “stolen generation”, his heartbreaking song Took the Children Away, originally recorded in 1990, gained celebrated status, won various awards – including the international Human Rights Achievement Award – and forced Australia to confront the ugly truth of the government policy, which ran from the 1880s to the 1970s, of forcibly removing Aboriginal babies from their families and cutting them off from their traditions so they would be educated and assimilated into white culture. He was born on January 8 1956 in Mooroopna, Victoria, to the Bunjalung Aborigines Nellie Austin and Archie Roach Snr, but, like many others, was taken by government … [Read more...] about Archie Roach, Aboriginal singer who shamed Australia with his song Took the Children Away – obituary
