Next month, TV presenter Fearne Cotton will be curating a special festival alongside breast cancer charity, CoppaFeel! – and Metro.co.uk is hopping on board as its proud sponsor. It’s the eleventh year Fearne, who is one of the charity’s patrons, has helped put on the event called Festifeel with CoppaFeel!’s founder Kris Hallenga, and this year they’re bringing in chart-toppers McFly as her headline act, as well as Radio DJ Adele Roberts taking a turn on the decks. ‘ Festifeel is a really important marker in the CoppaFeel! calendar for everyone,’ Fearne explains. ‘Mainly because it is a chance to really celebrate and come together, and music is the perfect way to do that. ‘It brings people together in the same space, where they can let go, have fun and and dance – but always with an undercurrent message, which is to check your chest. ‘It’s a simple message but one that we all need to be told many times over, so it becomes a regular practice. And there’s no … [Read more...] about Metro joins forces with Fearne Cotton’s festival for breast cancer charity CoppaFeel!

‘I’m not dying, but I have some bad news’: How MP broke news she had breast cancer
Dawn Butler has opened up about one of the toughest parts of her cancer diagnosis – how to tell her loved ones without worrying them. The Labour MP, 52, has spoken candidly about it, revealing earlier this year that she thought she might die after receiving the news following a routine mammogram. She has now teamed up with Metro.co.uk to launch the campaign A Million Missed Mammograms to try and persuade those yet to have a screening to get one booked. ‘You can survive breast cancer, and the earlier you find it the better,’ the former minister said. Ms Butler has thankfully recovered, but she had to endure some incredibly difficult days along the way. On top of the uncomfortable examination, the operation to remove cancerous cells and the fear her diagnosis may become more invasive, she also found herself struggling with something many might deem relatively simple – telling her family, friends and colleagues about what she was going through. The Brent Central MP … [Read more...] about ‘I’m not dying, but I have some bad news’: How MP broke news she had breast cancer

New Wi-Fi reflection tech could send signal through impenetrable walls
A tailor-made structure may make microwave WiFi signals more transmittable through walls without reflection, according to new research. This works in much the same way as anti-reflective coating on a pair of eyeglasses, which also has implications for future 6G mobile communications. Annoying reflections disrupt the transmission of waves, including visible light and invisible mobile communications, and in a new paper appearing in the journal Nature , scientists at the Vienna University of Technology and Rennes University in Austria offer a method to eliminate wave reflection. The paper is titled Anti-reflection structure for perfect transmission through complex media . "You can think of it like the anti-reflective coating on glasses," says Professor Stefan Rotter of Vienna University of Technology. "You add an extra layer to the lens, which then causes light waves to reach the eye better than before. The reflection is reduced," he said. While this is simple in the … [Read more...] about New Wi-Fi reflection tech could send signal through impenetrable walls

Our 7 dogs were burned alive by evil arsonists – we heard them screaming as they died and even the police were in tears
EVIL arsonists burned alive seven dogs in a sick attack on their kennels and the owners could hear the pooches “screaming” in agony. Emma Frowen, 42, said she and her family “don’t feel safe” after the attack on their beloved pets , which were doused in petrol and set alight. The mum, whose house is about a minute’s drive from the kennels housed on allotments, said two French bulldogs named Gucci and Chanel – which they were minding for friends – a pregnant cocker spaniel called Poppy which was due to give birth in three weeks, a bull cross called Yogi and three bull greyhounds called Ice, Narla, and Ferne, were set alight at around 1.30am on Sunday. She said the dogs , which they’d had for two years, were mainly looked after by her two heartbroken sons and their girlfriends. Being Brenda
Until a few years ago, the name David Reimer meant little to those outside his immediate circle, and by the time he killed himself last Tuesday in unknown circumstances in his hometown of Winnipeg, it was already slipping back towards obscurity - a name belonging to nobody more remarkable than a local odd-job man, a 38-year-old former slaughterhouse worker who was separated from his wife, and enjoyed shopping at flea markets and tinkering with his car. In fact, to anyone taking an interest in the development of psychology in the 1970s and 1980s, Reimer's life story would have long been infamous, but also pseudonymous. Going by the name "John", and subsequently "Joan", David Reimer had been an unwitting guinea-pig - along with his identical twin brother Brian - in a medical experiment at first celebrated, then notorious. Masterminded by a prominent Baltimore physician, John Money, it was an attempt to settle, once and for all, the fraught nature-versus-nurture debate: to prove that … [Read more...] about Being Brenda
