The figures released last week from the 2021 census in Northern Ireland showing that Protestants in Ulster are now outnumbered by Catholics for the first time seem to me to hold the possibility of a major change in the structure of the United Kingdom. Unionists are traditionally Protestants while Nationalists are mostly Catholic. A drop in the number of people who see themselves as British and an increase in those identifying as Irish compared with the last census in 2011 points in a similar direction. So too does the fact that the survey shows the average age within the Catholic community to be younger than in the Protestant community and more births in that community than amongst Protestants. John Finucane, a Sinn Fein MP described the shift as irreversible and called for the Irish Government to plan for the possibility of a “unity referendum”. It is not entirely clear that if there were to be a referendum on whether the province should remain within the United Kingdom which … [Read more...] about Is eventual Irish unification now inevitable?

Protests around the killing of George Floyd intensified and continued to spread across the country on Friday, with at curfews being issued in Minnesota after several demonstrations turned violent. An 8 p.m. curfew was put in effect in anticipation of further violent protests in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where Floyd died Monday. A video circulated after his death appearing to show Floyd pinned to the ground by police who ignored his pleas for help. Curfews were also in place in St. Paul and neighboring suburbs, while the National Guard was also deployed in an attempt to control crowds. Protesters continued to march through the city despite the measures, although more dramatic scenes emerged in other locations throughout the country. In Atlanta, Georgia, protesters broke windows and sprayed graffiti on the walls of CNN's headquarters during a protest on Friday night. Vandals also reportedly targeted police cars, breaking windows and setting some of the cars on fire. The U.K. hospitality industry is worth about £100 billion ($127.7 billion) to the British economy or, more accurately, it was before COVID-19 hit. Pubs shut, restaurants closed and nightclubs were banned from opening as lockdown restrictions took hold. Now, an industry that employs around 10 percent of the total British workforce is in crisis, with literally millions of low-paid workers unsure if they still have a job, if the company they work for will still exist or if their place of work will remain boarded up forever. So what do Britain's pubs, restaurants, nightclubs and leisure companies do now? When will pubs reopen? When can people start going to their favorite restaurants again? And what happens to over two million people working in hospitality? "It's gonna be just catastrophic, f***ing catastrophic," Jonathan Downey, food and drinks entrepreneur and founder of the Hospitality Union, tells Newsweek . "Around 12 years ago [in the global financial crash of 2008], I used … [Read more...] about Exclusive: Half of U.K. Pubs Will Never Reopen After COVID-19, Union Says

The BBC's Patience Atuhaire reports from the capital, Kampala. It was billed by some as an election like no other - a 38-year-old musician raised in a Kampala slum was challenging a man who first became president 35 years ago. When Robert Kyagulanyi, better known by his stage name Bobi Wine, first launched his presidential bid, some in President Yoweri Museveni's ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) dismissed the threat. They said he was only popular in the capital, but then he kept drawing crowds even in far-flung corners of the country. Then, as a government minister commented, it was claimed that the … [Read more...] about Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni overcomes Bobi Wine challenge – for now
Ukrainian forces appear to once again be making lightning advances through the eastern and southern parts of their country. But the latest Russian retreats, in recently-annexed Kherson and Kharkiv, comes as Vladimir Putin signed laws officially absorbing the four regions taken by Russia last week. The developments are likely to increase unease about the chances of the Russian President being tempted to use nuclear weapons to shift momentum in the conflict. The Russian frontline is said to be disintegrating in Kherson and Kharkiv following hasty retreats, with Ukraine advancing east towards Luhansk. Yesterday the Russian defence ministry presented maps that appeared to show a significant loss of territory. The department’s daily video briefing made no mention of any pullbacks, but on maps used to show the current state of play, the shaded area highlighting Russian military control was much smaller than the previous day. In northeastern Ukraine, where the Russia … [Read more...] about Russia forced into rapid retreat in region ‘annexed’ by Putin just days ago
