It's the Jets versus the Sharks at the Royal Exchange tonight. The much-loved musical West Side Story has been re-imagined for the in-the-round theatre by the theatre's artistic director Sarah Frankcom. It is 60 years since West Side Story was last performed in Manchester. The musical was originally staged at Manchester Opera House in 1959 before it transferred to the West End. And there's certainly been a thirst from Manchester audiences to see the show performed in the city again. There's been a bit of a buzz surrounding it in recent months, with the theatre now releasing extra tickets every Wednesday as a lot of nights have already sold out. West Side Story, based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, tells the tale of a forbidden romance between New York gang member Tony, a founder of the Jets, and the sister of his Sharks rival Maria. A girl who became famous 20 years ago for being Leicestershire’s first frozen embryo baby is hoping for a different kind of fame. Grace Longland was featured on the front page of the Leicester Mercury when she was born in 1999 after her parents used the latest IVF treatment to achieve their dream of having a child. Now 19, Grace is hoping to be a West End star and is fundraising for a year-long course at the prestigious Arts Educational Schools in London, which taught actors ranging from Julie Andrews to Martin Clunes. Grace, of Syston , hopes the course will be her ticket to an amazing career on the stage. Musical theatre students will perform West Side Story to celebrate Chesterfield Studios’ tenth anniversary. Their presentation of Leonard Bernstein’s iconic musical opens at the town’s Pomegranate Theatre on Tuesday, February 19 and runs until Thursday, February 21.The tragic re-telling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet set in New York’s West Side, tells the story of Tony and Maria, two lovers caught in a battle between rival gangs, the Sharks and the Jets. Bernstein’s pulsating, driving score set to lyrics by Stephen Sondheim is as fresh today as it was when it first opened in London’s West End sixty years ago, and features the well known songs, America, I Feel Pretty and Tonight.
