Covid-19 has hit the Dancing With The Stars camp with Eric Murray and Rhys Mathewson catching the virus and ruled out of the competition's semi-finals. Format rules mean the most recently eliminated competitors return to the dance competition. Kerre Woodham and Alex Vaz will be back on the dance floor. It’s semi-finals time for Dancing with the Stars. Emily Writes tries to understand what’s going on. RECAP : What a week it has been! Remember last week when we were dancing to Darude like it was 20 years ago and nobody had Covid-19, and our beloved Rhys was on the top of the leaderboard ? To paraphrase the old Titanic lady, it’s been 84 years since then. Eric was struck first by the dreaded ‘Rona. He was replaced by Vaz – righting last week’s wrong. Then it claimed our sex symbol Rhys ! Devastation! That means Kerre is back. Ukraine’s first lady speaks and a call for diplomacy – round-up
Published 19 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Related Topics Russia-Ukraine war There is still no end in sight to the fighting in Ukraine - but according to the country's President, Volodymyr Zelensky, the conflict can only be resolved through diplomacy. Speaking on Ukrainian television, he suggested his country could be victorious on the battlefield - but that the war could only come to a conclusive halt " at the negotiating table ". But he indicated this would not be easy, as neither side wanted to give anything up - and negotiations between the two sides have stalled. Meanwhile, on the ground, Russia's military said Mariupol's Azovstal steelworks had been "completely liberated", with the last Ukrainian defenders surrendering. Queen’s corgi dogs, horses and swans to take centre stage in Jubilee parade
Corgi dogs, horses and swans are all being put through their paces in a historic warehouse in Coventry ahead of their starring roles in a parade to mark Queen Elizabeth II´s 70-year reign. One of the procession´s tableaux, entitled "The Queen´s Favourites", has been commissioned from Imagineer, an outdoor events company based in the English West Midlands city. Director Jane Hytch said the royal commission came as a "total surprise", but that the job was a "huge honour". The parade, touching on more personal aspects of the 96-year-old queen´s life, will wind through central London to Buckingham Palace on June 5. "When we were given the queen´s favourites... we thought about what does she love outside of all her duties?" said artistic director Kathi Leahy. Dogs and horses were the obvious choices. In particular, Leahy focused on the queen´s most famous canine companions, the short-legged, big-eared corgis. A pack of 20 corgi puppets, mounted on wheels, will be stars of the … [Read more...] about Queen’s corgi dogs, horses and swans to take centre stage in Jubilee parade
Germans and sex: It’s complicated
Regine Thoeren ran Cologne's only erotic store for women for 25 years. At the end of 2019, the now 65-year-old closed "Lady's Toys" for good — the competition from the internet just became too intense. DW's Meet the Germans host Rachel Stewart had a chat with her to find out more about the Germans' sex life. DW: Ms. Thoeren, over the past couple of years, the Germans have spent a lot of time with their loved ones at home — inevitably due to the coronavirus pandemic. How do you think that has affected their sex life ? Regine Thoeren:Unfortunately, it was too often not in a good way... Studies show that there is more violence against women , as well as more violence against children. People are living crammed together in spaces that are often too small. Unfortunately, I have nothing better to report. There is certainly a number of people who have flourished by spending time in close quarters, but it is a minority. Should I stay or should I go: The eventual upside of divorce
Sarah Catherall is a Wellington-based journalist and writer. OPINION: Thirteen years ago this month, my husband left me. He was the one to end the marriage but, truth was, we were making each other miserable. I became my worst self when he was in the room - I nagged, I complained, I resented many things about him. He didn’t like the person he became around me either. We hadn’t started out like that, of course. A decade before, I had walked in a white satin dress among grapevines and married the man I was utterly in love with. Over the following years, our lives had become too busy - work, business, three kids, house renovations - and put us under too much pressure. We had tried counseling but nothing could heal or repair the way we felt about one another. But when he spoke those few words, “It’s over’’, I felt as though I had been in a car crash. First trans peer a step closer as hereditary candidate claims seat
The House of Lords could shortly welcome its first trans peer and only female hereditary member. Matilda Simon was this week given permission to contest the next by-election for one of the upper chamber’s remaining 92 hereditary seats . If she wins, she will doubtless become the envy of peers’ daughters across the country, because the vast majority of titles may only be passed to a male heir. However, because of a legal loophole, the candidate, born Matthew Simon in 1955, has inherited and retains the Barony of Wythenshawe, despite being in all other legal respects a woman. The House of Lords confirmed that her claim to the peerage was approved by the Lord Chancellor last week. The Barony was created in 1947 for Ernest Simon, the industrialist and former Lord Mayor of Manchester mainly remembered for his slum clearances and housing projects in the city. His son Roger, the second Baron Simon, was a Left-wing journalist and one of the founders of the Campaign for Nuclear … [Read more...] about First trans peer a step closer as hereditary candidate claims seat
Why everyone is planting sunflowers for Ukraine
In the past week the sunflower has emerged as a symbol of resistance. The towering blooms, with their cheerful faces that turn to face the sun as they grow in the height of summer, are the national flowers of Ukraine and have come to represent hope and solidarity as the world reacts with shock and horror to the Russian invasion. At the State of the Union address in Washington on Tuesday , as her husband declared: “We, the United States of America, stand with the Ukrainian people,” Jill Biden had customised her vivid blue LaPointe silk dress with an embroidered yellow sunflower on the wrist. Earlier, at another event the First Lady wore a face mask similarly embroidered with the same flower. On social media, the sunflower – along with the Ukrainian flag – has also swiftly become a symbol of solidarity. And in London, activists have graffitied the Russian embassy with the blooms. But perhaps the most memorable – and kick-ass – deployment of the sunflower was from a woman in … [Read more...] about Why everyone is planting sunflowers for Ukraine
Can introducing a ‘fake commute’ into your day help productivity when working from home?
The pandemic has changed the way that many of us work, perhaps forever, with a huge portion of the population working from home for over two years now. While those of us able to carry out work from the comfort of our homes are very fortunate, and there are many upsides, there’s no denying that the lack of boundaries, natural routine and real-life contact with colleagues can be hard to navigate sometimes. But there are lots of things you can do to keep yourself motivated, productive – and, most importantly, stay sane. One of the most crucial is to make sure that you get out of the house and create routines. So, with that in mind, I decided to trial building in a ‘fake commute’ to my working day each morning, to see how it impacted my mood, productivity and general wellbeing. The idea is that I’d get up each day, shower, get dressed and go for a walk that would act as a replacement for the ‘commute’ part of my day, giving me a sense of routine – and a reason to … [Read more...] about Can introducing a ‘fake commute’ into your day help productivity when working from home?
