A British Airways pilot has been jailed for eight months for being FOUR TIMES over the drink-fly limit before he was about to fly a plane. At an earlier hearing Julian Monaghan, 49, admitted being drunk in the cockpit of a passenger jet before a long-haul flight to Mauritius. He was four times the legal limit for flight crew when he turned up for work. Monaghan discovered his fate at a hearing at Lewes Crown Court today where he was sentenced to eight months in prison. He was arrested at Gatwick Airport on January 18 on suspicion of reporting for duty as a pilot when his level of alcohol was over the prescribed limit. Monaghan had earlier pleaded guilty to the offence - and to having 86mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood in his system when the legal limit for a pilot is 20mg. A British Airways pilot was hauled out of the cockpit by armed police after a flight technician called 999 as the aircraft was being prepared for takeoff. Julian Monaghan, 49, was arrested amid dramatic scenes on board the 300-passenger plane at around 8pm at Gatwick Airport in January. The 12-hour flight to Mauritius was minutes from departing when police were called because cabin crew could smell alcohol on the pilot's breath. Emelyn Jones, defending, said his client had a vodka and coke at 10.30am, claiming the pilot had drunk in an attempt to send him to sleep before the evening flight. But Monaghan, a long-serving British Airways first officer, was allegedly still drunk when he stepped into the cockpit. A BRITISH Airways flight attendant was more than ten times the booze limit after she got trolleyed in the sky. Patricia Casey, 51, downed eight shots of vodka aboard a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. She was arrested at Heathrow’s Terminal 5 after being reported by a passenger who smelled the booze on her breath. Tests two hours later showed she had 201mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood — ten times the limit of 20mg allowed for air staff. Yesterday, her mile-high binge ended an unblemished 21-year career as cabin crew after she admitted breaking aviation laws. Casey wept as a court heard she had been self-medicating with booze as her 18-year marriage fell apart.
