Last year, there were 773,139 motor vehicle thefts across the country, a rate of 237.4 per 100,000 residents. Of course, where you live can greatly increase or decrease the chances of your car getting stolen. 24/7 Wall Street determined the city in every state where your car is most likely to be stolen based on data from the National Insurance Crime Bureau. The city with the highest rate of car thefts in a state is not necessarily the city with the poorest community or with the biggest crime problems. The majority of these 50 cities have lower poverty rates, higher education levels, and higher household incomes than their respective statewide figures. One regulator’s push to rein in title insurance costs
If you're among the country's more than 5 million homebuyers this year, you'll write some big checks when you close on your home. One of them -- for "title insurance" -- is way too big, especially if you live in New York state, according to Maria Vullo, the state's Financial Services superintendent. Vullo is trying to crack down on what she calls "unscrupulous practices" in the highly concentrated title insurance industry. Vullo said four companies -- soon to be three -- own 90 percent of the national market and set prices in concert with each other. She said they also spend millions on inducements like strip clubs, sports tickets and lavish entertainment for the real estate lawyers, agents and loan officers who direct the homebuyer to their preferred title insurer. "The industry has charged [these expenses] back to consumers as 'marketing costs,'" said Vullo. A falling number of accidents has fuelled a drop in car insurance across the UK
The cost of car insurance has plummeted by 12 per cent in the last year, according to new figures out today. Average premiums have fallen from £562.07 to £496.80 in the past 12 months, with Jersey seeing the biggest drop out of any region, falling 22.5 per cent. However, despite the general fall for consumers across the country, east London remains the most expensive postcode in the country to insure a car, at just over £1,000. North London saw one of the largest declines in car insurance prices across the country with a 15.3 per cent fall. In a number of small towns throughout the country, more than half of households earn more than three times the national median. And incomes in these towns are growing faster than they are nationwide. To determine America’s richest towns, 24/7 Wall Street reviewed household income data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey in every American town with a population between 1,000 and 25,000. For comparison purposes, boroughs, census-designated places, cities, towns, and villages were all considered.
