How Gen Z is hooked on cryptocurrency and NFTs
By Mariko Oi Published 14 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The lure of making a quick buck has always attracted young people to invest in risky assets. For Generation Z, it is the volatility - and the decentralised nature - of digital assets such as cryptocurrency and NFTs which appeals. But they are unregulated, meaning there is little investor protection. "All my friends were talking about [cryptocurrency] so one day I just decided why not just jump in and see if I can make some money," says 20-year-old Paxton See Tow. All he needed was his phone and trading thousands of dollars' worth of assets was only a click away. Generation Z - also known as Zoomers - are the age group born between the mid-1990s to early-2000s. They grew up online, playing games and meeting friends virtually, so the transition is natural. Cryptocurrencies are digital currencies while … [Read more...] about How Gen Z is hooked on cryptocurrency and NFTs
US boy, 13, dies after sand dune he was digging tunnel in collapsed
A 13-year-old US boy has died from his injuries a day after a sand dune he was digging in collapsed and buried him at a state park in Utah, officials have confirmed. The boy had been digging a tunnel into the dune at southern Utah's Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park when it collapsed on him on Saturday evening (local time), park rangers said. A family member alerted authorities, and rangers arrived to dig the boy out from what they said was about 2 metres of sand. Rangers and Kane County Sheriff’s deputies managed to rescue him and found he had a pulse. They administered CPR and the boy was transported to a St George hospital and then to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City. I avoided a new travel rip-off simply by pressing a button
Ben Groundwater is a columnist, blogger, feature writer, and host of Traveller's podcast Flight of Fancy. He was named travel writer of the year by the Australian Society of Travel Writers in 2014 and 2015. "Do you agree to this currency conversion?" This is a new one. I'm standing in front of a Bankomat ATM on the shores of Lapad beach in Dubrovnik, trying to withdraw enough Croatian kuna to get me through the next few days. I've done the standard thing, looked up the exchange rate online, guessed at how much cash I'll need, calculated the rough exchange, and punched the amount into the ATM (using a debit card that doesn't usually attract any foreign conversion or withdrawal fees). Why do people still buy personalised number plates?
By Laura Francis Published 6 May 2013 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Last year the UK's Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency raised £67m from the sale of personalised number plates. But why do people still buy them? Lord Alan Sugar has one: AMS 1. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge drove away from their wedding with one that read JU5T WED and broadcaster Chris Evans has several. But it's not only the rich and famous who buy personalised number plates. Despite the recent economic downturn, they are still big business. Personalised plates are regularly used in films and television series to hint that a character is a braggart or an egomaniac or just a bit desperate for attention. In the TV series The Persuaders, international playboy Brett Sinclair, 15th Earl of Marnock, drove an Aston Martin DBS with the number plate BS 1. Who, what, why: How dangerous are elderly drivers?
Published 23 September 2013 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The number of over-70s who hold a UK driving licence has exceeded four million for the first time. But how dangerous are older drivers? There are occasional very well-publicised stories about elderly drivers going the wrong way on a motorway or dual carriageway. Only last week an 84-year-old woman died after driving the wrong way on the A1 in Northumberland. The RAC Foundation says the UK's oldest licensed driver is a 107-year-old woman, and there are 191 people over the age of 100 with a licence. They are among 4,018,900 people aged over 70 with full UK driving licences. But how dangerous are older drivers? The Department for Transport (DfT) says there is no evidence older drivers are more likely to cause an accident, and it has no plans to restrict licensing or mandate extra training on the basis of age. … [Read more...] about Who, what, why: How dangerous are elderly drivers?
‘I lied to them for months’: Buffalo shooting suspect kept plans from family
For months, as 18-year-old Payton Gendron formulated a plan to kill dozens of black people in Buffalo, New York state, he worked to keep his racist plot a secret from his family, according to Gendron's postings online. "I literally can't wait any longer, my parents know something is wrong," he wrote on April 15, musing about when to carry out a planned shooting that took place on Saturday, killing 10 people at a Buffalo supermarket. The writings were uploaded to internet file-sharing sites in two batches in recent weeks after apparently being posted on the messaging platform Discord from November 2021 through early May. They reveal a teenager intent on keeping his parents in the dark not only about preparations for mass murder but also about the quotidian details of his life. They help fill out a portrait of a young man who described himself as isolated from family and as someone who had few friends and found refuge in hate.
