How a Formula One crash led to the disappearance of a £140,000 diamond
Formula One has long been renowned as the millionaire's playground, with individual parts of the cars often worth more than your average house. Drivers like Lewis Hamilton are also paid a small fortune for their endeavours, while tickets to races themselves can set you back thousands of pounds, making it a very exclusive club. Naturally, this often leads to some rather remarkable stories - including one where a crash led to the disappearance of a £140,000 diamond. If you haven't heard it, let us indulge you. Unsurprisingly, Monte Carlo was the location for the jewellery escapade but while heist movies will focus on the casinos, it was the F1 grid that played host to a scene that would probably be rejected by most Hollywood executives for being too unrealistic. In 2004, Jaguar were part of a PR stunt for the Monaco Grand Prix to promote the release of the upcoming Ocean's 12 movie starring the likes of Brad Pitt and George Clooney, which was the second movie in the … [Read more...] about How a Formula One crash led to the disappearance of a £140,000 diamond

Taumarunui businessman Kevin Rule was killed after Clarke, who was heading south in a Mazda on State Highway 3 near Piopio, pulled out to pass a Ford Ranger turning right into a side road on Sunday, February 23, 2020. He smashed head-on into the 69-year-old's northbound 1957 Chevy Bel Air. Do driver awareness courses make roads safer?
Danny Shaw @DannyShawBBC on Twitter Published 22 June 2016 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Early on a Saturday morning I found myself in the basement of a hotel in the company of 12 strangers. The air conditioning was on at full blast; the atmosphere between us was also rather chilly. This was our "sentence" for committing a minor motoring offence - and none of us wanted to be there. We were on a driver awareness course called What's Driving Us? It was that, or accept a £100 fine and three penalty points. No contest, really. Over the next three hours there were discussions, presentations and role-play. None of us embraced it with any great enthusiasm - we just wanted to "tick the box" and let the weekend begin. My crime? I had jumped a red light driving up the A10 in north London and was spotted by a CCTV camera. The road ahead … [Read more...] about Do driver awareness courses make roads safer?

‘Myth of hard-working Royals is a smokescreen – their only job is to protect themselves’
"Let's go back to the '50s," Prince William beams, donning the medals he 'earned' by being a Mummy's boy - while commoner Kate slips into her budget-friendly Alexander McQueen dress (a hopeful omen, perhaps?). "Smile and wave," he says, standing symbolically high on his moving pedestal , the corners of his mouth slowly slipping. Why isn't everybody cheering for the white man? Will thinks. Yes, the monarchy benefitted from slavery. Yes, protestors are calling for reparations . Yes, I'm completely out of touch but I got up on stage and declared slavery should NEVER have happened . What more can I do? "I wonder if this was a mistake?" Kate whispers - the first thought she'd formed on her own in a while - as she shakes the hand of a Black child through the prison- I mean gates. Safe to say, the standing symbolically high on his moving pedestal deserved the backlash it created. But from it, talk about the royals' hard work ethic and dedication to duty also arose. … [Read more...] about ‘Myth of hard-working Royals is a smokescreen – their only job is to protect themselves’

Waka Kotahi steers away from blanket 80kph plan for Northland, Auckland highways
RICKY WILSON/STUFF "A lot of us already find 100kph slow": Geoff Upson and his dog George are the faces of an informal campaign to prevent speed limit drops. New Zealand’s state highway officials have backed away from a region-wide speed limit reduction in Northland, instead proposing to cut speeds in danger areas like around schools. Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency opened formal consultation on Tuesday for reduced speeds on 11 state highways in Northland and north Auckland. Tai Tokerau is the first area in the country to have a region-wide speed review under the agency’s Road to Zero campaign , which aims to cut deaths and serious injuries on New Zealand roads by 40% by 2030. But the agency originally planned to slash all state highway speeds limits, from 100kph to 80kph – a proposal which drew backlash from leaders fearing congestion and impatience on the roads.
