The Speechwriter: Inside the Bush Administration During the Iraq War
My youngest daughter was born in December 2001: a war baby. When my wife nursed little Beatrice in the middle of the night, she'd hear F-16s patrolling the Washington skies. During the weeks before, anthrax attacks had killed five people and infected 17 others. What would come next? In October, I attended a crowded briefing in the fourth-floor auditorium of the Executive Office Building, at which the Secret Service explained its plans to protect the White House against a biological attack. They weren't very reassuring. Basically, we'd all be dead. Even more disturbing were the small-session briefings by staffers for the new Homeland Security adviser. They warned of simultaneous car bombings at strategic intersections, targeted assassinations of officials as they retrieved their morning papers from their stoops, and poisonous gases released in Metro stations. Like many Washingtonians, my wife and I had prepared an emergency kit in the basement: canned goods, bottled water, … [Read more...] about The Speechwriter: Inside the Bush Administration During the Iraq War

This has to change." The article was published in The Washington Post . Depp was not mentioned by name in the article, though Depp's lawyers say it's about him. Chef José Andrés on serving meals in a war zone
In the sea of despair that is Ukraine, Chef José Andrés and his World Central Kitchen are a lifeline. They have been on the ground there for months, feeding thousands of Ukrainians whose lives have been upended by the war. Since Russia's invasion began in February, Andrés has traveled back and forth, spending more than 40 days in Ukraine. And for him, that's not all that unusual. For the past 12 years, Andrés has brought his not-for-profit kitchen to the front lines of catastrophe. They have served more than 60 million meals, from earthquake-ravaged Haiti to hurricane-battered Houston. But Ukraine is a little different: it's the first time chef Andrés and his people have operated in a war zone. On April 16, one of the kitchens his organization was running in Kharkiv was hit by a Russian missile. "The people that were with World Central Kitchen, we had four wounded persons, and they went to the hospital, and thank God everybody was fine," he said. Truth is, the attack barely … [Read more...] about Chef José Andrés on serving meals in a war zone

Ukraine war: French companies in Russia under pressure to leave
As Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy undertook his virtual tour through the parliaments of the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany over the past few weeks, he mostly asked for more weapons and jets to fight the Russian army invading his country . In his video address to the French parliament last Wednesday, though, the 44-year-old also targeted specific French companies. "French firms should leave Russia," Zelenskyy urged, as always dressed in a khaki T-shirt and with the yellow-blue Ukrainian flag in the background. "[Carmaker] Renault, [supermarket chain] Auchan and [DIY chain] Leroy Merlin have to stop being the sponsors of the Russian war machine — values are more important than profits," he added. Then he called for a worldwide boycott against Renault. Not an easy decision But leaving Russia is not an easy decision. And affected companies — and some economists — say it could even be counterproductive for the West.
