Two sisters who were adopted as babies and lived thousands of miles apart have been reunited thanks to a home DNA test. The popularity of at-home DNA testing has boomed in recent years, as anyone can purchase a simple kit for themselves or a loved one and uncover secrets hidden in their own DNA. MyHeritage, a leading genealogy site, ran a pro bono initiative called DNA Quest in 2018, where it donated 15,000 tests to adoptees to support them in being reunited with their birth families through DNA testing. This resulted in hundreds of reunions, according to the company. Sisters Ashleigh Brown and Laurinda Collado are one of those. Brown and Collado are now aged 33 and 35. Born in the Dominican Republic to the same biological parents, Collado was adopted when she was 5 months old and raised as an only child in Bristol, Connecticut. Two years later, her adoptive parents were given the choice to take in her sister Ashleigh but they chose not to. Instead, Brown was adopted at 6 weeks … [Read more...] about Sisters separated at birth reunited after 30 years thanks to home DNA test

Nurse cuts off patient’s toe at home visit after failing to read their medical notes
A registered nurse needlessly lopped off a patient's toe after failing to properly read her medical notes, a misconduct hearing was told. Eleanor Trowell was working a shift as an agency nurse for Wiltshire Health and Care on March 8, 2018, when she was called to deal with a patient at home. The misconduct hearing was told that when Trowell arrived at the home she failed to read Patient A's notes properly before assessing and treating the foot. She then failed to follow the relevant care plan and did not obtain advice from the tissue viability team or vascular surgeon about the correct treatment for Patient A's toe. A summary of the hearing explained she then "inappropriately removed Patient A's toe." Trowell admitted removing the toe and it was found proven that she had not sought consent from the patient before carrying out the procedure. The nurse expressed remorse for her mistake but alleged that there were systematic failures at her former employer which were … [Read more...] about Nurse cuts off patient’s toe at home visit after failing to read their medical notes
Homes to be paid for export of electricity to the grid
Homes and businesses that provide electricity to the grid will be guaranteed payments from suppliers under new laws introduced this week. Small-scale electricity generators, which install solar, wind or other forms of renewable energy generation at a capacity of up to 5MW, will be ensured a payment for each unit of electricity they sell to the grid under the smart export guarantee. The legislation will put a legal obligation on energy suppliers with over 150,000 customers to introduce export tariffs by Jan 1 and is part of the Government’s bid to make the UK a net zero emissions country . According to Chris Skidmore, the energy and clean growth minister, the new laws can encourage further small-scale electricity generation. “The future of energy is local and the new smart export guarantee will ensure households that choose to become green energy generators will be guaranteed a payment for electricity supplied to the grid,” he said. “We want the energy market to … [Read more...] about Homes to be paid for export of electricity to the grid

Pensioner stages sit-in protest over ‘ugly’ 30ft broadband pole outside her home
A determined pensioner who staged a sit-in protest over plans to put a 30ft broadband pole outside her home has been handed a police caution. Dot Bolton, 75, blocked contractors from installing the pole on the pavement in front of her bungalow in Ramsgate Close, Sutton on Hull. She placed a deckchair over the position intended for the mast and stood firm, using an umbrella to seek shade in the extreme heat while defying warnings from police that her actions were illegal. Dot, a grandmother, told how she ‘just had enough’ when the contractors arrived. ‘If you asked me last week if I’d be doing a sit-in protest, I would’ve said no way! ‘I have never protested before in my life, I’m usually the one that stands back.’ But she won her three-hour battle after the contractors, SCD, agreed to move the position of the pole to a grass verge closer to the road. Dot says she has ‘no regrets’ after accepting the caution for obstructing a public highway to prevent the … [Read more...] about Pensioner stages sit-in protest over ‘ugly’ 30ft broadband pole outside her home
