Rihanna and Lupita Nyong’o are set to star in a buddy movie for director Ava DuVernay after a tweet of the two went viral. The Grammy-winning singer and Oscar-nomimnated actor were pictured together at a Miu Miu fashion show in 2014, which was then used as part of a joke movie pitch on Twitter in April. “Rihanna looks like she scams rich white men and lupita is the computer smart best friend that helps plan the scans,” read the tweet, which has now received over 96,000 retweets (It’s since been reported that the original idea actually came from Tumblr). Both stars then expressed interest in the idea on Twitter, followed by Selma director DeVernay and Insecure writer Issa Rae. According to Entertainment Weekly, the internet-created project was pitched to studios at this year’s Cannes film festival and Netflix has come out on top after a very aggressive bid. It’s unclear yet as to whether the film will follow the same idea as the initial tweet. Netflx … [Read more...] about A meme come true: Rihanna and Lupita Nyong’o to star in film based on tweet

Nick Broomfield on his damning Whitney Houston film: ‘She had very little control over her life’
The title of Nick Broomfield’s new documentary about Whitney Houston echoes a question she often asked herself: “Can I be me?” Apparently, she often could not. According to Broomfield’s damning film, Houston had to repress her true self throughout much of her life, due to a perfect storm of factors, which included her controlling mother, Cissy Houston; her pushy record company, Arista; her co-dependent husband, Bobby Brown; her conflicted sexuality; and the mountain of drugs she used to blot all of that out. “Having to be someone else – to play the ‘Whitney character’ – was something that became impossibly difficult,” says Broomfield. “From an early age, she had very little control over her life.” Whitney: Can I Be Me? – which has its premiere at the Tribeca film festival this week – pivots on a wealth of frank interviews with backup singers, hairdressers, bodyguards and marketing people, all of whom … [Read more...] about Nick Broomfield on his damning Whitney Houston film: ‘She had very little control over her life’
Real story behind The Devil and Father Amorth documentary as Exorcist director films real exorcism – and the footage “amazes” scientists
Forty five years after he filmed The Exorcist the director behind one of the most terrifying movies has shot a real exorcism. When William Friedkin shot The Exorcist in 1973 he had never actually seen an exorcism, though even at the time he believed in the power of the rite which is designed to evict demons or other evil spirits from a 'possessed' person. Now four decades on he's been given the rare chance to film an actual exorcism carried out by Father Gabriele Amorth, who regularly performs them. The director of The Exorcist was invited to watch the Italian priest at work. The result is the documentary The Devil and Father Amorth, which was shown at the Venice Film Festival and is out April 20. It shows Father Amorth and a woman in battle after an introduction explains 500,000 people a year are exorcised in Italy. Father Amorth sprinkles Holy Water and begins reciting verses, in Italian and in Latin. Suddenly, the woman begins to shake and roar. The 'demon' shouts "I am Satan" and … [Read more...] about Real story behind The Devil and Father Amorth documentary as Exorcist director films real exorcism – and the footage “amazes” scientists

The Exorcist has been named the most terrifying film of all time by Brits.
