HYPED-up spreads containing products such as avocado and coconut oil have been quietly ditched from supermarket shelves. A small Kiwi coconut oil company has slipped its way into the big books, cracking a major US supermarket chain. Whangarei cooking oil creator Cocavo has secured an agreement with Walmart, to have three varieties of oil stocked in over 4000 stores across the states. What kind of oil is best? Coconut oil, championed by clean-eating advocates as a healthy alternative to butter, is “pure poison” that increases cholesterol, a Harvard professor has said. Dr Karin Michels, an epidemiology specialist from the US institution’s school of public health, claimed the ingredient was “one of the worst foods you can eat”. Sales of coconut oil have surged in the UK, with £23.5 million spent on the trendy product in the last 12 months, up 454 per cent on five years ago, according to consumer analysts Kantar. Its "superfood" reputation stems from claims it contains a "good" kind of saturated fat which some believe boosts good cholesterol. But in her recent lecture titled “Coconut Oil and Other Nutritional Errors” at the University of Freiburg, Dr Karin … [Read more...] about Coconut oil is ‘pure poison’ that increases cholesterol, says Harvard professor

Coconut oil as a beauty treatment is said to be bad for the skin, clogging up pores. As for consumption, … [Read more...] about Is coconut oil bad for you, how is it used to treat hair and skin, does it help your tan, and which celebrities use it?
