Silverstone delivered one of the most exciting grands prix in years, with Carlos Sainz taking his first career win and five drivers scrapping for the runner-up spot in the closing laps. It was a sell-out show with celebs including Tom Cruise getting in on the action. But, among a ton of interesting storylines – not least a dip in fortunes for championship leader Max Verstappen and a popular return to the podium for home hero Lewis Hamilton – all memories will be fixed on Zhou Guanyu’s horror crash. It took 53 minutes for the race to be restarted after he, George Russell and Alexander Albon had their races ended before the first turn. The No.24 Alfa Romeo was clipped by Russell, and sent flying down the track upside down before it flipped over the top of the tyre barrier. The roll hoop was destroyed but the Halo cockpit protection did its job. It is the fourth time the device, introduced in 2018, has saved an F1 driver from serious injury. Confirmation that the … [Read more...] about How special F1 engineering saved Zhou Guanyu’s life in British Grand Prix crash at Silverstone

Psychiatry and the War
by BRIG. GEN. WILLIAM C. MENNINGER, USA MILITARY psychiatry differs from civilian psychiatry in that the Army must be totally responsible for a man — not only for his food and clothing, but especially for his ability to participate in his particular mission. Consequently, when a man did not fulfill his function, the Army had to find the cause and, if possible, remedy it. In many instances the cause lay in his personality and in his emotional difficulties. Since there is a human tendency to retreat into illness under stress, it was not surprising to find that many men became ill when they were unable to meet the demands of the new life. Military psychiatry differs also in quality from civilian psychiatry. In the Army much more effort and time are invested in a preventive psychiatryan attempt to keep men healthy and to seek out causes for poor morale. Until comparatively recently, the majority of civilian psychiatric patients had to be brought to the psychiatrist by relatives, … [Read more...] about Psychiatry and the War

Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher snubbed as F1 rookie names childhood idol
Zhou Guanyu snubbed both Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher when revealing his childhood Formula 1 icon. There is much interest in the Alfa Romeo driver this season, not least because he is the only current rookie in the sport. But the 23-year-old is also the first Chinese racer ever to take part in the series, and is helping to bring more attention to F1 as a whole from his homeland. He was still very young when he made the tough decision to leave, despite having begun karting as an eight-year-old living near Shanghai. Aged just 12 when he migrated to the UK, it was a move he made solely to pursue the dream he is now living. Zhou has now revealed that it was not Hamilton or Schumacher who he revered as a youngster watching F1, but another world champion. Asked by AS which driver he followed most closely in his youth, he did not hesitate in answering: " Fernando Alonso ." He added: "I was just more of a fan. In China there was a lot of support for Ferrari and … [Read more...] about Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher snubbed as F1 rookie names childhood idol

Tuesday evening UK news briefing: Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid resign from the Cabinet
Rishi Sunak has quit as Chancellor and Sajid Javid has resigned as health secretary as Boris Johnson's leadership faced a fresh crisis following the Chris Pincher scandal. In an incendiary letter, Mr Javid said the British people "expect integrity from their government" but voters now believed Mr Johnson's administration was neither competent nor "acting in the national interest". Mr Johnson had tonight admitted "it was a mistake" to give Mr Pincher his job as deputy chief whip and said: "I apologise for it". Mr Sunak and Mr Javid's resignations come after Downing Street was accused of lying over the Chris Pincher scandal this morning, as Lord McDonald said Mr Johnson was briefed "in person" about concerns relating to the then Foreign Office minister.
