Sunderland offered hope that they could still battle to safety in the Championship by recording their biggest win of the season at Derby. The Black Cats won 4-1 at Pride Park thanks to goals from George Honeyman (might get made an own goal), Ashley Fletcher, Aiden McGeady and John O’Shea. Never mind Good Friday, this was great Friday for Chris Coleman and his players. The three points lifted them off the bottom of the league table above Burton Albion, and just three points adrift of safety. It was a solid display on the road from Sunderland who recorded their first win since January 20. It followed a relatively good day for Sunderland where the teams around them didn’t take advantage of an earlier kick-off. Barnsley almost did. They moved a point further ahead after a draw with Bristol City at home, but had been leading in that match until the 91st minute. That point could be valuable though. Sunderland are three points point but the Tykes’ goal difference is … [Read more...] about Derby County 1-4 Sunderland player ratings: Read James Hunter’s match marks
It's fair to say that James Tarkowski was completely relaxed about his England debut. ALSO READ: James Tarkowski can cope with international level says England boss Gareth SouthgateIn fact the Clarets centre back insinuated that his first appearance for his country at Wembley Stadium - the iconic home of English football - was just like playing with his mates. That's a clear sign of the 25-year-old's progression this term at Turf Moor and it shows that the former Oldham Athletic defender belongs at this elite international level.Tarkowski, who signed a new contract at Burnley at the start of the year, which ties him to the club until the summer of 2022, was named in a three man defence by Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate for the friendly against Italy on Tuesday evening. The one-time Brentford man, who made the switch from Griffin Park just over two years ago, played the full 90 minutes in the 1-1 draw against the Azzurri, though conceded a dubious penalty late on, allowing Lorenzo … [Read more...] about James Tarkowski: England debut felt like playing football with my mates!
He has filled-out, moved on and, by his own admission, matured beyond belief. But when conversation turns to tomorrow’s UEFA Championship qualifier against Ukraine at Bramall Lane, Dominic Calvert-Lewin exudes an almost childlike excitement.“All of the lads know I’m a Blade,” the England under-21 international grins, “They all know where I’m from and what my background is. They’ve been giving me lots of stick, saying ‘I bet you’re looking forward to this one.’ And they’re right, I am looking forward to it. Because it’s my home.”Plenty has been written about Calvert-Lewin the player. His progression from Sheffield United fan to player and subsequent seven figure transfer to Everton have generated plenty of column inches. Less, however, is known about Calvert-Lewin the person. Which is why, as we chew the fat following a training session at St George’s Park, the FA’s national football centre, it is … [Read more...] about Sheffield United: Young Lion Dominic Calvert-Lewin tells James Shield why it means so much to be returning to Bramall Lane

He had already made a number of unsuccessful escape attempts by the time he arrived at Stalag Luft III, near Sagan, in the spring of 1943. Plans were being made to dig three tunnels, and he was soon recruited to the organisation and appointed... Perth’s James Fleming has battled back from shoulder surgery and is now targeting gold at the Commonwealth Games. The Rugby Sevens star was included in Scotland’s 13-man squad for the Gold Coast last week ahead of the April event. Having missed out on representing his country at Glasgow 2014, Fleming is determined to make up for lost time. “I’m immensely proud to be selected for the Commonwealth Games,” the 30-year-old told the Perthshire Advertiser. “I missed out on the Glasgow 2014 games and it was four years until the next opportunity, which seemed like a long way away. “I always feel massively privileged to represent Scotland whenever I get a chance so to do that at a Commonwealth Games is huge. “Once I had the shoulder operation I knew it would be tight to get back fit for the Games. “However it was a case of setting wee targets along the way and just controlling what I could to put me in the best position come April.” … [Read more...] about Golden chance for Perth’s James Fleming at the Commonwealth Games
