A gym owner in California who planned to reopen his businesses after being forced to close amid the coronavirus outbreak has reversed his decision after officials said his members face arrests and fines. Sean Covell, who owns three Fitness System franchises across the Sacramento area, announced to his members in a letter that he will be defying the state's "stay at home order" and reopening his doors again to the public on Friday, believing the restrictions are violating his constitutional rights. The gyms were closed as part of California Gov. Gavin Newsom e's order enacted on March 19 to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. "The last few months have undoubtedly been some of the hardest in our lifetimes," the letter reads. "We have essentially been under house arrest, individuals and businesses have seen the trampling of their constitutional rights, people have been terrorized by the news, and politicians have been dispensing misleading information, half-truths and headlines … [Read more...] about California gym owner backtracks on plan to defy coronavirus lockdown by reopening, blames “unconstitutional harassment”

North Korea’s Covid-19 infection estimated to be over 1 million
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un criticised officials over slow medicine deliveries and mobilised the military to respond to a surge in suspected Covid-19 infections, as his nation struggled to contain a fever that has reportedly killed dozens and sickened nearly a million others in a span of three days . North Korean health authorities said on Monday that eight more people died and an additional 392,920 were newly found to have feverish symptoms. That brings the death toll to 50 and illnesses to more than 1.2 million, respectively. It’s a sharp jump from six dead and 350,000 sick reported last Friday, a day after the North said that it found that an unspecified number of people in capital Pyongyang tested positive for the Omicron variant. Kim has acknowledged that the fast-spreading fever, highly likely driven by Covid-19, is causing “great upheaval” in the country, and outside experts say the true scale of the outbreak is likely much bigger than what’s described in the … [Read more...] about North Korea’s Covid-19 infection estimated to be over 1 million
COVID Has Killed 1 Million Americans — And Left Behind 9 Million Loved Ones
When Honoria Bush , 32, began working as a nurse in February 2020, she did not know how much death she would soon witness. But just one month later, Texas would see its first confirmed COVID-19 case. Soon, the beds in the Houston hospital where she worked would be filled with patients on ventilators, many of whom wouldn’t survive. But nothing could have prepared her for the moment her phone rang on Aug. 31, 2020, when she learned her brother, Chris Miller, had been taken to the hospital after his college roommate found him on the floor of their home, struggling to breathe. Nearly four months later, on Dec. 18, 2020, Miller died from complications with COVID-19. He had celebrated his 22nd birthday just a month earlier and would have graduated college the following May. “I felt like the wind was blown out of me — I was confused, I felt lost, and I felt so alone,” Bush told BuzzFeed News. “I literally felt like God had just taken the breath out of me.” At the time of her … [Read more...] about COVID Has Killed 1 Million Americans — And Left Behind 9 Million Loved Ones
Suspected gunman in California church shooting could face death penalty, prosecutors say
The suspected gunman in a shooting at a California church that police believe was politically motivated could face the death penalty in a murder charge announced by prosecutors on Tuesday. David Chou, 68, is accused of killing one person and wounding five others when he targeted the Geneva Presbyterian Church in Laguna Woods, California, on Sunday afternoon. He is expected to be arraigned Tuesday on 10 counts, including murder for the death of 52-year-old Dr. John Cheng, who charged him during the attack, Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said at a press conference before the court appearance. The murder charge includes a special circumstance allegation of lying in wait, which opens Chou to a possible death sentence or, in the alternative, life in prison without the possibility of parole. Spitzer said Chou "did everything he could to fit in" as he mingled with parishioners before he pulled out a semi-automatic handgun and began firing into the crowd during a … [Read more...] about Suspected gunman in California church shooting could face death penalty, prosecutors say
Airport buys LPSS administrative buildings for $4.2 million, to lease it back for two years
The Lafayette Regional Airport has bought the administrative offices and other buildings from the Lafayette Parish School Board for $4.2 million. Airport officials announced the sale of 10.8 acres at 113 Chaplin Drive and a two-year lease agreement to school officials to prepare to move to its new location at the multistory Energy Plaza office building at 202 Rue Iberville. LPSS will lease the property for $273,201 per year and then continue to lease a warehouse and two small buildings for three years at $51,440 per year, airport officials said. The property will allow the airport to expand its footprint, director Steve Picou said, but officials did not give specific use. An 2020 report showed that the Lafayette airport property was the smallest airport by acreage compared to other airports in similarly populated areas. It was 20% smaller than the second smallest airport of these areas, which is in Asheville, North Carolina. In an ever-evolving business landscape, … [Read more...] about Airport buys LPSS administrative buildings for $4.2 million, to lease it back for two years
Ex-officer awarded nearly £1m over sexist ‘boys club’ culture in elite firearms unit
A former armed police officer is to be paid almost £1 million in compensation after she was forced to endure a sexist “boys club culture” within an elite firearms unit. Rhona Malone won an employment tribunal in 2021 against Police Scotland in a case which began when a senior officer said two female firearms officers should not be deployed together if a man was also available. Employment judges also accepted evidence that an instructor had said women should not be firearms officers because of how menstruation affected their temperament and that topless photos of women would be posted in a work WhatsApp group. Ms Malone, in her mid-40s, who had an exemplary record in the force before she retired in 2020 due to ill health, has agreed a £947,909 settlement with Police Scotland, it was confirmed on Friday. Iain Livingstone, the Chief Constable, also issued a personal apology for the “serious issues” highlighted by her case. He admitted there had been a “poor response when a … [Read more...] about Ex-officer awarded nearly £1m over sexist ‘boys club’ culture in elite firearms unit

The car of a former Oregon mayor who went missing last May was found Friday 40 feet under the Willamette River in Newburg, Oregon, with human remains inside. Ralph Brown left his home in Cornelius, Oregon, on the evening of May 16, 2021, and never returned. According to his family, the 76-year-old suffered from dementia, and his last cell phone pings indicated that he drove in circles within a 30-mile radius from his home for four hours on the night he disappeared, according to CBS News. “One of Brown’s adult children was able to reach him on the phone the night he went missing but said he sounded confused and was unable to describe where he was. Brown was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s a year before he went missing,” CBS reported. The Yamhill County medical examiner arrived on the scene after the remains were discovered but could not immediately identify them, authorities said, according to Oregon Live. Hillary Defeated Again: Hulu Passes On ‘Rodham’ After Nearly 2 Years In Development | The Daily Wire
Hillary Clinton took another loss as Hulu has passed on a show about her that had been in development at the network for nearly two years. “Rodham” is based on the novel of the same name, which tells the story of an alternate universe in which Hillary does not marry Bill Clinton, but instead serves as a Northwestern University professor before running for president in 2016. “ Rodham is a nauseating, moving, morally suggestive, technically brilliant book that made me think more than any other in recent memory about the aims and limits of fiction,” Annalisa Quinn wrote for NPR in 2020 about the Curtis Sittenfeld novel. “20th Television is still shopping the project to other streamers, now that Claire Danes and Dakota Fanning are attached to play Clinton at different stages of her life,” Variety reported. Clinton recently pontificated about the possible repeal of Roe v. Wade , lecturing, “None of us should accept a future in which our daughters and granddaughters have … [Read more...] about Hillary Defeated Again: Hulu Passes On ‘Rodham’ After Nearly 2 Years In Development | The Daily Wire
