WhatsApp users will soon be able to leave group chats without others knowing and control who sees when they are online. The game-changing new features are part of a privacy update which is rolling out across the Meta-owned platform this month. It means tactics such as muting group conversations to avoid awkward exit notifications or waiting to open messages to appear offline could soon be a thing of the past. Users will also be given the ability to block people from taking screenshots of View Once messages, which are designed to disappear after being opened. WhatsApp confirmed the screenshot blocking tool is being tested with plans to launch it soon. Lords vote to close the “Bercow loophole”, meaning peers can be subject to investigation for their time as MPs
The House of Lords has voted to close the "Bercow loophole" in the complaints process, meaning peers will soon be subject to investigations over misconduct allegations dating from their time as MPs. Conduct Committee Chairman Lord Mance said the proposal would ensure "former members of either house can be investigated for alleged bullying, harassment or sexual misconduct". Under the plans, historic cases against ex-MPs will be investigated by Commons authorities, with the Lord Commissioner then responsible for issuing a sanction. Former Tory MP Lord Cormack supported the proposals and argued it was the “right” course of action. He said: “If a member of either house is accused of behaving improperly, it is of course right that the member should be thoroughly investigated and appropriate action taken." The Telegraph revealed in January that former Speaker John Bercow could have faced investigation over past allegations of bullying under the plans had he been elevated to the … [Read more...] about Lords vote to close the “Bercow loophole”, meaning peers can be subject to investigation for their time as MPs
BJ Ojulari explains what it means to him to wear No. 18 for LSU football
Junior edge rusher BJ Ojulari was awarded the coveted No. 18 last week for his leadership on the team. The number, which started after the 2003 season when quarterback Matt Mauck led the Tigers to their second national championship. He passed his number on to running back Jacob Hester, who led the Tigers to their 2007 national championship. "All the 18s put us in a group chat and they were congratulating me," Ojulari said. "It was great just for all of them to embrace me and welcome me into that brotherhood." Ojulari said that the most recent No. 18, Damone Clark, was the first to congratulate him on the honor. Both Clark and punter Avery Atkins wore the number last season. "Just being a younger guy looking up to him, especially last year, he was outstanding," Ojulari said. Clark led the Southeastern Conference and was No. 2 nationally with 135 tackles last year. Ojulari led the defensive line as a sophomore in both tackles (55) and sacks (7) last … [Read more...] about BJ Ojulari explains what it means to him to wear No. 18 for LSU football
Another week of high temperatures means no respite for much of drought-hit France
In Seillans, southeast France, the stream is dry, a fountain near the town hall no longer flows and the ground is parched. The village, like much of France, is in the grip of the country's worst-ever drought. "I've lived here for 17 years, and I've never seen this," says the chief of police, Phillipe Grenêche. "Since April, not a drop of water... it's sad." One of the village's boreholes has virtually dried up, so Phillipe is taking us to see the emergency supplies many residents now rely on. On the rocky hillside, a white truck pulls up and the driver, Daniel, begins to pump water into the system. Advertisement He repeats the trip eight times a day, so the taps don't run dry. To make supplies stretch, people are limited to 200 litres a day. Energy bills forecast to hit over £4,200 a year
By Karen Hoggan Published 22 minutes ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Energy bills for a typical household could hit £4,266 next year, consultancy Cornwall Insight has warned. The higher estimate means the average household would be paying £355 a month, instead of £164 a month currently. Cornwall cited regulator Ofgem's decision to change the price cap every three months instead of six and higher wholesale prices for its high forecast. But Ofgem said no forecast for next year could be "robust" at this stage and had "limited value". The latest price cap - the maximum amount suppliers can charge customers for average energy usage in England, Scotland and Wales for October - is due to be announced at the end of this month. Cornwall expects this to rise to £3,582 a year, compared to the regulator's prediction of £2,800 a year . Dr Craig Lowrey, … [Read more...] about Energy bills forecast to hit over £4,200 a year
‘Summer sale’ for Channel migrants fuels record crossings
A “summer sale” for Channel migrants is fuelling a rise in crossings with people smugglers slashing prices by as much as £1,500 per person, it has emerged. Social media adverts, discovered on Monday by The Telegraph, saw the traffickers offering “bargain” prices and crossings on small boats that have “never been cheaper,” down from £5,000 to as little as £3,500 per migrant. The promotions were primarily targeted at Albanians who accounted for four in 10 of the nearly 3,000 migrants who crossed the Channel during a six-week period this summer. Border Force experts suggested the smugglers may be cutting prices to open up new markets like the Albanians previously unable to afford the charges. MPs on the home affairs committee have also claimed that gangs may be exploiting the court-enforced delay in deportations of illegal migrants to Rwanda to persuade them to make the crossing now before the flights start. The disclosures come as another estimated 300 Channel … [Read more...] about ‘Summer sale’ for Channel migrants fuels record crossings
Liz Truss’s tax cuts could trigger a wave of investment into the UK, says L&G chief
Liz Truss’s plans to slash taxes could trigger a wave of investment into the UK, the boss of Legal & General has said. Nigel Wilson, the influential City grandee and chief executive of the UK’s biggest pensions manager, said that cutting taxes on businesses could boost the attractiveness of Britain as a destination for international investors. Attracting overseas money could soften the blow as the economy heads into a recession, Mr Wilson said. "Reducing the tax burden will be seen by international investors [as a sign] that the country is open for business,” he said. It comes as Ms Truss and former chancellor Rishi Sunak, the two candidates vying to replace Boris Johnson as prime minister, continue to trade blows about whether immediate tax cuts would boost economic growth or stoke inflation. Ms Truss is in favour of rapidly cutting taxes in the hope it will stimulate economic activity, while Mr Sunak argues that slashing taxes now will only serve to prolong the … [Read more...] about Liz Truss’s tax cuts could trigger a wave of investment into the UK, says L&G chief

Josh Groban on his new Netflix show, his new album and his canine collaborator
"Everything that's happened has been unexpected," Josh Groban says of his career. As a teenager, he studied acting, but that high lyric baritone could not be denied: By 2007, Groban was the No. 1 pop artist in the U.S., thanks in part to his 2003 hit "You Raise Me Up." In 2015, he was offered a starring role in the Broadway musical Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 , an electro-pop adaptation of War and Peace. That earned him a Tony nomination. Now, a few TV cameos ( The Office, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend ) over the years have evolved into his own show, Netflix's The Good Cop, from Monk creator Andy Breckman. Groban plays Tony "TJ" Caruso, a by-the-book New York City police officer; Tony Danza co-stars as his dad, a disgraced ex-cop. The 10-episode series debuts September 21, which also happens to be the release date for Groban's eighth studio album, Bridges . "The timing was perfect," he says of Good Cop 's four-month shoot. She's trying to figure out who she is with her best friend, Dan (RJ Cyler), by her side trying to serve as the voice of reason.
