Letters: Voters will punish the Government for not acting on the migrant crisis

November 22, 2021 by www.telegraph.co.uk

SIR – The Government has had ample time to solve the problem of the cross-Channel illegal-immigrant business. The hot air must end and the Government must demonstrate that it is not being outwitted by the rules, the French, people-smugglers or Left-wing lawyers. This demonstration needs to come very soon or the Conservatives can kiss goodbye to their parliamentary majority. Mick Ferrie SIR – British taxpayers have little knowledge of the induction process for the vast numbers of illegal immigrants crossing the Channel. Where are they all accommodated? What sort of identity papers are they supplied with? How much money are they given? Are they immediately vaccinated against Covid? Surely we have a right to know. Cameron Morice SIR – The Tory Party will not resolve the migration problem unless it can devise some legal means of differentiating between, and dealing with, economic migrants and true refugees. Adrian Fyles SIR – The attraction of Britain to migrants … [Read more...] about Letters: Voters will punish the Government for not acting on the migrant crisis

Levi Bellfield: Dominic Raab seeks to block serial killer’s plans to marry in jail

May 13, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Serial killer Levi Bellfield ’s plans to marry in jail prompted a Government review on Thursday as Boris Johnson said he was “sickened and appalled”. Justice Secretary Dominic Raab is taking urgent legal advice to see if there is a way he can block the application by Bellfied to marry his fiancee, said to be a prison visitor in her 40s whom he has befriended while in the high security Frankland jail in county Durham. Even if he cannot stop it, Mr Raab said the Government’s planned new British bill of rights would aim to close the loophole that allowed criminals like Bellfield to marry in jail under article 12 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). “This is exactly the kind of case where we need written down in UK law a clear set of criteria, that shouldn’t be trapped by an elastic interpretation of human rights,” he told The Telegraph. “I think most people will think it defies common sense that the Government today can’t insist, in relation to Category A high … [Read more...] about Levi Bellfield: Dominic Raab seeks to block serial killer’s plans to marry in jail
